The end of 2016 is filled with new beginnings in Paris, thanks to the opening of a new cultural center and floating theater. The festive season is also well underway, with Christmas markets and carol services popping up everywhere, and two major fashion charity sales mean that retail therapy has never been better for the soul. FOOD │ Treat Your Tastebuds to a Day at the Salon Saveurs des Plaisirs Gourmands

The Salon Saveurs des Plaisirs Gourmands is Paris’ ultimate gathering for foodies. Since 1996, it has been presenting the newest and best from the world of gastronomy and is the perfect place to pick up ideas and ingredients to make your end-of-year celebrations extra special. More than 350 gourmet producers will be present, from France and around the world, as well as chefs, cooking teachers, and bloggers.

CULTURE │Celebrate the Inauguration of the Centre Social et Culturel Rosa-Parks

The Centre Social et Culturel Rosa-Parks, which will serve inhabitants of the Portes de La Chapelle, d’Aubervilliers, de La Villette neighborhoods, is celebrating its opening with three weeks of festivities. On the opening night, you can expect to see some amazing street art and a photography exhibition, eat great food, and listen to a variety of concerts. Paris Anti-Discrimination Week will also feature prominently in the calendar of events over the following weeks.

FASHION │ Do Some Good by Shopping at the Braderie de la Solidarité d’Autremonde

This is the 23rd Braderie de la Solidarité d’Autremonde, an event created in 1994 by a group of young volunteers in order to raise funds for a Christmas party for homeless people. Every year, the biggest names in fashion, design, and beauty donate thousands of items from their collections to the charity. Proceeds now go to a range of services for people in precarious situations, including migrants.

MUSIC │ Pick Up a Pick at the 2nd Salon de la Guitare at La Bellevilloise

The Salon de la Guitare is back for its 2nd edition at the ever-popular La Bellevilloise concert venue in the 20th. The guest of honor this year is Jean-Pierre Favino, who has been creating top-quality acoustic guitars at his workshop for 70 years. Meetings for professional musicians, conferences, concerts, and the chance to try and buy exceptional instruments are all on the agenda.

MUSIC │ Waltz Your Way Around the Coolest Cultural Center in Paris at the Orchestra Ball

The most fashionable cultural center in the capital, Le Centquatre, will host its most prestigious orchestra for one night of incredible music – from Offenbach to Satie via Galliano and Piaf – and dancing: the Orchestra Ball. More than 50 top performers will play over the course of the evening and, for all those reluctant dancers out there, professionals will be on hand to show you how it’s done.

ART │ Get Beneath the Canvas at the René Magritte Art Conference

The René Magritte Art Conference is being held to coincide with the major exhibition of the artist’s work currently underway at the Centre Pompidou, ending on January 23rd. Art historian Françoise Gagliano will lead the encounter, which offers a re-reading of Magritte’s emblematic works. If you have already seen the exhibition, this evening might settle any lingering questions you have and, if you haven’t, it’ll set you up for an even more profound experience.

FILM │ Witness a Moment in History with La Couleur de la victoire by Stephen Hopkins

📅 Thursday, December 8th

La Couleur de la victoire (The Color of Victory) by Stephen Hopkins is being shown as part of Documentary Month at the Mémorial de la Shoah. Written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, it follows the African-American athlete Jesse Owens in his preparations for the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympic Games. At the time, Owens is battling with racism in his personal life and the United States is struggling with its decision on whether to compete in Nazi Germany.

FILM │ Watch La Mariée by Joël Curtz at SENSOPROJEKT #3

La Mariée (The Bride) by Joël Curtz is a documentary film that tells the harrowing story of Pippa Bacca. The Italian artist and her creative partner, Silvia Moro, left Milan on March 8, 2008, on a hitchhiking mission through Europe to Jerusalem. They planned to wear wedding dresses for the duration, an outward display of the message of peace they were carrying. On March 31st, Bacca disappeared. Her murdered body was found several weeks later.

DESIGN │ Find a Glittering Gift at a Designer Christmas Market Where Everything is 50€ or Less

MUSIC │ Get a New Perspective on Global Warming at the Concert Climat

Concert Climat is a musical evocation of humanity’s fight against climate change. ‘Eaarth’ is the 1st part of a trilogy of jazz septette suites inspired by readings of literary works by Bill McKibben, Naomi Klein, and James Hansen. Composed by French-American pianist and trombonist Joe Makholm, Concert Climat was created by the Paris Jazz Repertory Septet during the COP21 conference in Paris in December 2015.

FILM │ Fete Women in Cinema at the Short Film Festival

As part of the Short Film Festival, the Marguerite Yourcenar Multimedia Library will be screening three films under the title Images of Women. All from 2014, the three short films include the story of a group of 20-year-olds at a service station in the south of France, a portrait of Mademoiselle Kiki, queen of the Montparnasse night, and an examination of sex education by three generations of women on a family weekend break.

ART │ Experience a Part of the Exposition Festival ’12X12′

The ’12X12′ festival presents the works of 12 artists in residence at the 100ecs, an experimental cultural venue, over the course of 12 days in the 12th arrondissement. For its 7th edition, the Hélène Berr Multimedia Library hosts the works of visual artist and musician Aurélia Nardini. The artist draws inspiration from situations and people she meets to create spaces between documentary and fiction.

THEATER │ Hear It For the First and Last Time at NEW, the Improvised Musical

NEW produces a brand new story every time. The audience provides a title, location, and plot twists along the way, and musicians compose songs on the spot, an illustrator draws and projects images in real time, and actors and singers create lyrics and characters as they go. A team of ten professional artists from the United States, Great Britain, France, and Germany are behind the English versions.

MUSIC │ Wonder at Daniel Harding and His Homage to Schumann

Daniel Harding continues his homage to Schumann at the Orchestre de Paris with an adaptation of The Paradise and The Peri. Inspired by a Persian legend contained within One Thousand and One Nights, the tale depicts a spirit who must collect the blood of a hero, the sigh of a girl, and the tears of a repentant criminal in order to gain his place in heaven.

ART │ Shake Things Up at PUNK IS ALIVE!

As part of the international colloquium The Punk Scene in France (1976-2016): 40 Years of History, the first academic study of its kind in the country, the photographer Sue Rynski is presenting her work on the underground alternative scene in Paris and Île-de-France at the FGO-Barbara. Rynski is a cult figure from the Detroit rock scene of the late 1970s, and her work expresses the vitality and passion of the musical movement.

ART │ Dive Into Piscines Parisiennes à Découvert

The MoKa exhibition, part of a project staggered across 2016, has been designed by Karim Adjali, a lifeguard at the Piscine Dunois, and Olivier Maître, a graphic designer. It is composed of photo montages of Parisian swimming pools, all of which bring in a real or fantastical element to the closed-off world of the municipal baths.

MUSIC │ Let Le Nez Rouge Guide You Through December Nights

Over 30 days in December, 105 artists will take to the stage to celebrate the birth of a new theatrical space in Paris: Le Nez Rouge, a converted boat docked in the canal at La Villette. Shows will include standup comedy, plays, concerts, short films, and cabaret.

THEATER │ Encounter an Alternative Take on NYE with La Femme rompue

Adapted from La Femme rompue (The Woman Destroyed) by Simone de Beauvoir, this powerful play is directed by Hélène Fillières and stars Josiane Balasko. Alone on New Year’s Eve, a tormented woman avenges herself with a storming monologue while the world gayly rejoices all around. Her words are an opposition to the violent idea of happiness imposed on the world.

MUSIC │ Behold the Best of Blues with Lucky Peterson’s ‘Love Song’

SPORTS │ Finish 2016 with a Slam Dunk at the All Star Game

Since its creation in 2002, the All Star Game of the French National Basketball League has been a sell-out event. The 14th edition will bring together all the biggest names from the year under one roof for a day of incredible plays and slam-dunking fun.
