Paris, the City of Lights, has been named as the most elegant city in the world, triumphing over cities like Venice, Florence, London, and New York. The reasons included everything from architecture, aesthetic lure and accessibility, to cleanliness, culture and style.

In many ways, this victory comes as little surprise, as Paris; postcard-perfect 19th-century cityscape has long captivated traveller hearts. The city is crisscrossed by wide boulevards lined with quaint, terrassed cafés, designer boutiques dotted along stretches like the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, the famous Champs Élysées and the dreamy River Seine that flows right through. Not to mention its unique landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Sacré Coeur, and the towering, 12th-century, Gothic Notre-Dame cathedral all adding to the city’s architectural lure.

Yet with the City of Lights still trembling in the wake of recent terror attacks – the Eiffel Tower is in the process of receiving bulletproof protection – a gentle reminder of Paris’ exquisite beauty and charm, by claiming the winning title of ‘the most elegant city in the world’, is welcome news all round.

The wide-ranging list considered obvious factors, like architectural beauty and aesthetic lure, but also less noticeable factors like accessibility. Cleanliness, culture and style also played their part in the scoring, with points determined by people who live in or visit the city, as well as fashion experts, architects and culture connoisseurs.
