Rossini’s 'L’italiana In Algeri' At The Théâtre Des Champs-Elysées

Updated: 27 May 2016
Mustafa, bey of Algiers, is tired of his wife Elvira, whom he plans to marry to a recently captured Italian prisoner, Lindoro. He wishes to replace her by the charming Isabella, who astutely manoeuvres to rescue her beloved fiancé… Lindoro!
Rossini was only 21 when he composed this exquisite opera full of energy and rhythm, at a time when the exotic flavours of the East were very much in vogue. It is also a quite daring approach to women’s role in society, giving the female main part a strong and shrewd personality asserting her power on men.

Celebrated conductor Jean-Claude Malgoire will direct his famous orchestra La Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy, in a production staged by opera specialist Christian Schiaretti. The score demands exceptional vocal prowess, together with a definite acting capacity. One of the composer’s most notable successes.
