'Monsieur De Pourceaugnac' At The Théâtre Des Bouffes Du Nord

Updated: 27 May 2016
Julie is devastated: she is in love with young Eraste, but her father wants her to marry a ridiculous provincial nobleman, Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, who travels to Paris to close the deal. Fortunately enough, the shrewd Sbigari and Nérine, two intriguers paid by Julie’s lover, will deploy all kinds of tricks to make Pourceaugnac’s journey in the French capital a dreadful experience that will get him out of his senses…

This hilarious play is a perfect example of the Molière ‘comédie-ballet’ in which Lully’s music is not a simple ornament, but an inherent part of the dramaturgy of the play. William Christie’s Arts Florissants will partner with acclaimed stage director and actor Clément Hervieu-Léger, from the Comédie Française, in a wild and savoury production.
