In 1934, Oscar Hammerstein had already adapted Bizet’s Carmen into a Broadway musical with Carmen Jones. Today, it is re-interpreted as a Cuban musical – a first of its kind –by Norge Espinosa, all whilst respecting Bizet’s original opera but in Spanish. It tells the story of Carmen, the daughter of an American soldier and a Cuban prostitute, who lives in Guantanamo the day before the Cuban revolution explodes. A prisoner working for the local cigar factory, Carmen dreams of a better life; a master of the art of seduction, Carmen uses it to her advantage. In a whirlwind of social chaos, passionate love and betrayal, Carmen is the portrayal of a Havana that is victim of its own trap.
