A delightful discovery, the Au Beaune’Heur wine bar, as hinted in the name, is an invitation to plunge into the best of Burgundy. Café des Sports
New to the mythical brasserie Les Sports, on the main street Rue Saint Jean, is the expansion of two new spaces: a VIP cocktail bar and a wine bar that offers a selection of more than 48 wines by the glass – thanks to a vacuum and nitrogen system that keeps the wine in the bottle from becoming in contact with air after opening, lengthening its life.
You come for the cachet of the iconic bar, and you stay for the champagne. The Hôtel Westminster, that has welcomed the likes of Marlene Dietrich and Ian Fleming, is imbued with the Franco-British atmosphere that made it a mecca for the who’s-who in the roaring 20s. Choose from a selection of vintage champagnes, lean back in the plush armchairs and imagine yourself in the age of Gastby.
Le Globe Trotter
This is the spot of choice for sport lovers on Rue de Metz, near the central post office and the fabulous covered market. Le Globetrotter somehow pulls off an eclectic combination of French bar and Irish pub, with an extensive selection of wines and beers. It is the trendy and most popular watering hole in town, smack in the center of the pedestrian area, resulting in a lively atmosphere all day long.
A welcoming, industrial-chic decor, Algy’s Bar enjoys a privileged location on the main pedestrian street; offering a good selection of wines and a selection of tapas-style sharing boards and mini-burgers. You can even order from a choice of three ‘aperitif in a box’ to take with you to a scenic spot to enjoy a good bottle of wine and a gourmet selection charcuterie, cheese and foie gras nibbles.
You can’t beat the view in any of the beach bars in Le Touquet, and O’Safran is no exception. Wiggling your toes in the sand, reclining on a beach chair and watch the sunset while you sip a chilled rosé or a refreshing flute of champagne. The wine list is not extensive, but well curated with reasonable prices… and the setting is simply unbeatable.
Last, but not least, across the river Canche in the port town of Etaples is something a little bit different. BiBoViNo takes boxed wine to a whole different level. The wine shop has a few tables that serve as a wine-tasting bar to order any of the local terroir wines from small producers, that you won’t find in upmarket wine shops. An opportunity to decide for yourself if you appreciate the wine or not, with a tasting experience devoid of the influence of marketing and the bling of expensive labels.
