Marseille is a melting pot of cultures. Home to one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean, it’s been a trading hub since 600 BCE. While it once had a slightly rough reputation, the ancient city has transformed itself into a tourist must-visit, with its yacht harbour, Byzantine churches and quirky street art. North African culture meets French cuisine in this vibrant port city. Tour La Major Cathedral, admire the Palais Longchamp and explore nearby Les Calanques by boat while staying at one of these top Marseille hostels for budget travellers – bookable on Culture Trip.

Described as Europe’s first “gallery hostel”, the People is certainly an art lover’s hangout. Graffiti artist GREM’s murals decorate the walls which sit neatly alongside minimalist Scandinavian-style furnishings. Choose between a four-, six- or eight-bed dorm, each with bedlinen included plus a privacy curtain. Private and family rooms sleeping up to six are also available. Head down to the basement for art workshops, cocktails and tapas.
