Sleep in Free Off-The-Grid Owl Cabins in Bordeaux

Jennifer Migan

Are you visiting Bordeaux anytime soon? If so, have you ever considered sleeping in a owl cabin instead of a hotel… for free? No, you’re not reading wrong and if you want to find out more about this architectural curiosity, read on.

Les Guetteurs, the third project of the Refuges Périurbains project, is the result of a collaboration between the association Bruit du Frigo and the artists from Zébra 3 that curates projects and events related to contemporary art. Supported by Bordeaux Metropole (formerly know as the Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux) and other towns, this initiative near the shopping mall Rives d’Arcins in Bègles was designed as a retreat along the Garonne riverside and is only few minutes away from the Bordeaux.

Candice Pétrillo, who designed the owl-shaped cabins said that the idea to create old-shaped cabins came naturally when she witnessed birds migrating due to some construction around their natural habitat. Their vertical structure give the impression that these three unusual wooden shelters are magical and totemic animals overlooking of the river. Despite their whimsical aspect, the goal of this project was primarily to design functional cabins. Each cabin comes with a bed in which two people can sleep in, but you need to bring your own sleeping bag (or bed sheets), a pocket lamp, an anti-mosquito lotion and… toilet paper.

The Refuges Périurbains are open from March 1st until November 30th, everyone can have access to one of the refuges for free (one night per person each season) through online booking only. If you’re driving there, the cabins are 200 meters from the Rives d’Arcins mall parking lot (behind Darty store). If you’re coming by bus, you can use the lines 11 and 34 (Rives d’Arcins stop) or line 36 (Arches de l’Estey stop). Book your stay now and get yourself ready for some great adventures!
