Marriage proposals are highly individual but Nice offers many great locations, perfect for all types of couples. If you want to ask that special someone to spend the rest of their life with you, there’s a variety of options. Whether you want to hike first to escape the crowds, or whether you want full-on luxury all the way, there’s something for everyone on this list.

2. A City Walk with Panoramic Views

Castle Hill is the best place for amazing views. You can climb the stairs or take the lift to the top of the hill, the site of the old chateau. It’s a lovely place to contemplate life (and love) but it closes at 7pm so it might not be possible to have the sunset kiss immediately afterwards. It’s a good daytime choice, followed by a lovely glass of champagne.

3. Remote Beach Picnic – La Réserve

La Réserve is a good walk away from the tourist crowds; it’s mostly a locals’ beach. While it can get busy, this place provides a way to propose in a more low-key, natural way. There are few restaurants and cafés so take the champagne and picnic with you. If the answer is yes, you can seal your love by jumping from the old diving boards into the crystal clear water below.

Nice can get pretty busy in the summer so it might be an idea to get a little more exclusive if you want to propose without the crowds watching. Nothing makes you feel more regal than overlooking the hundreds of people on the prom below. The restaurant at Le Meridien, La Terrasse, is more low-key, offering upmarket burgers and salads by the pool with a great cocktail list. The restaurant 3e at the Hyatt along the road, is more formal (fois gras, duck, sea bass, etc.) but still has an amazing view. It just depends on the kind of atmosphere you’re after but both are great summer proposal choices.

4. Blow the Budget in a Remote High Class Hotel – The Hotel Belles Rives (5*)

Hotel, Villa

This is one for avid readers or jazz lovers. Stay in the villa that the writer F Scott Fitzgerald rented for the summer in 1926. It’s where he threw his wild jazz parties for all his literary friends and where he wrote Tender is the Night. Or take lunch overlooking the sea and propose over some local rosé wine. It’s a little way outside of Nice but easy to get to on the bus and well worth the ride.

5. City Hotel with Incredible Views - Hôtel La Pérouse (4*)

Hotel, Boutique Hotel, Luxury

The four-star Hotel La Pérouse is actually built into the cliff that overlooks the Promenade des Anglais and is a supremely stylish choice for a proposal (although not the cheapest). If you can’t afford a room with a balcony view to pop the question, opt for the restaurant instead and choose your moment either with a pre-dinner cocktail or after dessert.

6. Among the Roman History – in Cimiez Arena

One for the history lover; you can propose in the old roman arena of Cemenelum (founded in 1AD). It’s a lovely walk through old villas and turn-of-the-century architecture. Take a picnic and visit the nearby Cimiez Monastery Gardens for a nice view over the Old Port on the way back down to celebrate.

Partying at the Jazz Festival in July

The Nice Jazz Festival has been going – in one form or another – since 1948, when Louis Armstrong arrived to put Nice on the jazz circuit. It used to be held in the Cimiez Arena but has now moved to the more central Place Masséna, which is more suitable for the 30,000 people that arrive each summer. If you love jazz, it’s an ideal party atmosphere to contemplate the rest of your lives together. If you don’t want the party to stop, continue at the two-week Jazz Festival in neighbouring Juan-les-Pins that follows the one in Nice.

7. At the Upmarket Beach Club – Castel Plage et Restaurant

This private beach is generally considered to be the best in Nice. It’s right at the end of the beach at Nice’s headland, tucked into the cliff. Reserve a table for the big moment and you can move from your comfortable sun loungers to pop the question in style and with ease. It’s a more luxurious beach option, where the service is wonderful and discrete, the food is good, the beach is clean and the view is amazing. What more could any beach-lover want?

8. Budget Individual Hotel – Hôtel Windsor (4*)

Boutique Hotel, Hotel

The Hotel Windsor looks very ordinary from the outside but the 57 rooms and lounge spaces inside are very unconventional. Tintin posters, individually designed rooms, a heated outdoor tropical pool (where you can have breakfast the morning after) all provide the perfect backdrop for a more quirky proposal. The cheaper rooms are some of the best prices in Nice for the quality of hotel and rooms.

Room rates start from 87€ (£75)

Remember that there’s no reason why you can’t do a number of things on this list to make the most of your special moment. Hike during the day, head to the beach, eat out at night… whichever you choose, just don’t forget the ring and champagne!
