Visiting Copenhagen will always leave you with a smile on your face. Consistently voted the happiest city to live in, the capital of Denmark is hard to leave, especially from the comfort of these luxury retreats stretching from the hip Vesterbro district to the colourful facades of Nyhavn, all bookable on Culture Trip.

It’s fervently bike-friendly, and even the military guards outside the government buildings will smile and shout a friendly “Hej!” as you cycle past. You’ll never be at a loss to find an English-speaker, and locals will gladly oblige any request to find the world-famous Little Mermaid or the gaudy Tivoli Gardens. These luxurious hotels present you with the perfect base from which to explore the city’s world-class architecture and design, Michelin-star culinary eateries, trendiest clubs and the most hygge-filled cafés and bars.

The Nimb, boasting no less than five superb restaurants and a splendid cocktail bar, is a fantasia of grand Moorish design contrasted with pared-back Scandinavian style. It shouldn’t work, but it does. The hotel’s location next to Tivoli Gardens is ideal, as is the rooftop pool with full panoramic views.

2. d’Angleterre

Hotel, Luxury

The d’Angleterre has been treating its guests to a luxurious blend of elegance, style and exceptional service for over 265 years. This five-star hotel has recently undergone extensive refurbishment and has reopened as a grand palace, where refined travellers will find their every wish fulfilled. Guests can enjoy Michelin-star Restaurant Marchal, where the hotel’s story began, and the bar terrace often spills out onto the sidewalk in summer, creating a vibrant al fresco hotspot on Kongens Nytorv.

There’s perhaps no better way to explore Copenhagen than on board the Sanders’ beautiful mahogany boat. Voyage around the city’s waterways sipping champagne and learning about the distinctive architecture and iconic landmarks of the capital from one of their in-house experts. Sanders’ cultural tours are legendary, from a behind-the-scenes tour of the Royal Theatre, to joining an art curator as they lead you through the capital’s best contemporary art galleries. The hotel’s location just behind Nyhavn is also one of the city’s best.

Room 606 is the one to book if you know your Danish design. Preserved in its original form, Arne Jacobsen’s functional efficiency is everywhere, from the room-length windows that bring in the sky, to the original Egg and Swan Chairs.

As with all Brøchner Hotels, Ottilia has been converted from an old building that previously had another function – in this case, the iconic Carlsberg brewery of Copenhagen. The way in which the building has been repurposed has won the Ottilia several international awards and nominations; striking industrial features blend with cosy social spaces and contemporary style in this four-star boutique hotel. Don’t miss the impressive rooftop with all-round city views.

8. Skt. Petri

This hotel, once a 1928 department store, works with bold design and even bolder colours. Emerald green downstairs; deep crimson in the rooms; vermillion red elsewhere. Works from Danish artists adorn the walls, along with striking geometric patterns on the floors, walls and furniture. Private dining rooms sit on either side of the garden courtyard, and you can enjoy deconstructed fine dining at their restaurant.

As the name suggests, this elegant hotel is inspired by grand Copenhagen residences. With 390 stylish rooms, there’s plenty of space for travellers looking for a touch of old Copenhagen’s charm. There aren’t many hotels that can offer their guests a 25m (82ft) pool, but here you’ll find a sustainably heated outdoor lap pool on a terrace overlooking the city. Their Earth Suite is a lesson in sustainable luxury that you’ll want to learn. Designed by Danish architect Eva Harlou, it’s a showcase of eco-friendly, innovative design from the bricks to the bed linen.

Designer’s Guild fabrics and furnishings run riot around this contemporary hotel, and nice little touches are everywhere – like nightlights under the bed that glow if you get up in the hours of darkness, and a rewards drinks voucher for cutting down on using housekeeping services. Its central location makes it a handy spot for a dash in from the airport, a night out in Vesterbro or a spending spree on the famous Strøget shopping street.
