Despite being the northern gateway to Croatia’s beautiful islands, Split is much more than a stopover city. With exquisite beaches, vibrant restaurants serving the freshest seafood and ancient Diocletian’s Palace, a Unesco World Heritage Site, there’s plenty here to see. If you really want to get a local feel for Croatia’s second-largest city, opt to stay in one of its stone-walled apartments. We round up the best below.

1. Divota Apartment Hotel

Down narrow, cobbled alleys in the charming neighbourhood of Veli Varoš, Divota Apartment Hotel splits itself among several restored stone houses. Don’t be fooled by the historic facade: the studio rooms and apartments here are ultra-modern, with hardwood floors, neutral palettes and fully equipped kitchens. The downstairs spa is a must. Nestled on a quiet street in downtown Split, just a short stroll from Diocletian’s Palace, Hotel Garden Apartments has an array of suites and cottages. In the very heart of Split, Tchiba is a contemporary apartment located within the old stone walls of Cyprian’s Palace. The apartment is spacious, with a full kitchen, tiled bathroom and a corner sofa facing the widescreen TV. When you want to explore the area, Bacvice Beach is just a short walk away.

5. Emperor's Suites

One for the romantics, Emperor’s Suites is split into two separate locations: the main apartments sit neatly at one end of the Riva boardwalk while the one-bedroom apartment can be found within Diocletian’s Palace. If you can, opt for the latter. As well as its decadent interiors, it also has a private sauna – perfect for soothing your sore legs after days of walking around the city.

6. Villa Simoni Apartments

Just moments from Split Harbour, the apartments of Villa Simoni boast glorious views over the city and twinkling Adriatic. Rooms are light and airy, each with a kitchenette, a marble or tiled bathroom and double glazed windows to block out any noise from the city. The location, however, is the star with popular dining options like steak and pizza bar, Bakra, and micro brewery, Mandrill Nano Brewing, just down the road.

Behind its old stone facade, placed equidistant between Diocletian’s Palace and Bacvice Beach, Serenity Split Apartments is a sleek option for any traveller. White and cream hues are complemented by blonde timber flooring in the rooms and the marble-clad bathrooms. There’s a small, stylish kitchenette for all your cooking needs.
