Experience Brussels Folklore At The Ommegang

Picture of Culture Trip
Updated: 11 July 2016
A tradition held in Brussels since medieval times, Ommegang offers up a rare chance to experience what these illustrious processions were all about. Starting since the very beginning from the impressive Brussels Grand Place to welcome Charles V and his son Filips II with as much luster as possible in 1549, the organization does a magnificent job recreating that royal and festive feeling to this day.

In front of the gothic City Hall – flanked by gold-adorned guildhalls – the square becomes the stage to a grand spectacle of flag throwing, stilt walking and much more. Besides trying to spot ministers and other high-flying Belgian politicians in medieval garb, you can take a stroll down two old-fashioned markets or catch a jousting tournament with a pint of ‘Ommegang’ beer in hand.
