Caroline Hiernaux and Margaux Bolle, the two designers behind AKIN TO ________, met while studying at La Cambre, Belgium. After their studies, they gained experience working for well-known brands such as Maison Martin Margiela, Helmut Lang, and Lanvin. While Margaux launched her first capsule collection, Caroline completed her postgrad studies at l’Institut Français de la Mode to gain a deeper understanding of the business side of the industry. In October 2013, they launched their brand.

Who is the woman you are designing for?

We design clothes for the modern and sophisticated woman that make her the center of attention. The resolutely modern lines of AKIN TO _______ envelop our muse, creating an intimate connection between the clothes and herself.

You successfully ran a kisskissbankbank campaign to kickstart your brand. How did it help achieve your goals?

In the world of fashion, a great amount of investment needs to done beforehand since one creates a collection one year in advance. The time between the moment one invests and the moment one reaps from it is quite long. The kisskissbankbank campaign was a great help for the creation of our AW15 collection. It has also allowed us to make ourselves known in the fashion scene.

Where can we find your collection in Brussels?

Our collections are available in Smets Concept Premium Store (Chaussée de Louvain 650) and Village Verve (Rue du Bailli 49) in Brussels. There is also a store for our friends in the Liège region, at Ginette ( Rue Saint Adalbert 7).

What is your favorite part about being a fashion designer?

Creating what we want, being inspired by the fabrics, the moods, the time.

Who inspires you the most in fashion?

Margaux: I’m very inspired by Hussein Chalayan, but many other designers as well. It varies from one season to another.

Caroline: Definitely Jil Sander and Philip Lim.

You are taking part in a showroom in Paris in October. Tell us a bit more about it?

We decided to take part in the Capsule Show in Paris for the collection Spring/Summer ’16.

For us, it’s an opportunity to show our brand to a different marketplace and meet new buyers, outside of Belgium. We hope that the show will bring us international retailers.

What are your plans for the future?

In the future, we hope AKIN TO _______ is going to grow bigger so we can make a living out of it. Also, we would love to open our own AKIN TO ______ store at some point. And maybe do some co-branding, try new things…

What would be your last meal on earth?

Margaux: Pasta and crêpes from Brittany.

Caroline: Dinner at La Buvette.

Favorite spot(s) in Brussels?

We love the neighborhood of les Marolles, eat at Kokuban restaurant or in The Little Green Shop, and Bozar is our go-to place for a cultural afternoon.
