The Upper Austrian capital has a mix of traditional Austrian breakfast and brunch culture and innovations. A classic Viennese breakfast is complemented with unusual options, such as steak and burgers, and unconventional locations. We list ten of Linz’s best cafés, bakeries, and restaurants for a good start to the day.

Gelbes Krokodil

A traditional café during the week, Gelbes Krokodil proposes an outstanding event every Sunday from September to May: a film brunch in co-operation with Moviemento cinema. This unique project gives guests the opportunity to enjoy a rich brunch while watching a favourite all-time classic or the latest blockbuster. Gelbes Krokodil successfully combines culinary and movie culture in a relaxed and homey atmosphere that immediately puts guests at ease.

Café Exx completely redefines the idea of a varied breakfast menu, with a range over 50 breakfast tapas in addition to their basic breakfast offers. Bäckerei Brandl

First opened in 1891, Bäckerei Brandl has been in the family for as many as four generations, who have each worked hard on keeping the long-standing tradition of one of Linz’s oldest bakeries. Bäckerei Brandl is impressive with both a homey atmosphere and its very own show bakery, where a delicious range of fresh breads and pastries are prepared every day.

Salonschiff Fräulein Florentine

Salonschiff Fräulein Florentine is probably Linz’s most extraordinary breakfast location: a ship that was recently bought and lovingly restored by IFEK, a local art and culture association. In addition to classic breakfast options, a varied lunch menu and delicious home-made cakes are served in the refurbished inner rooms of the ship. On sunny days, guests can even enjoy their meals on the ship’s upper deck, which provides an exceptional view of the modern architectural projects alongside the Danube.

Josef Linz

On weekdays, Josef Linz offers a midday brunch, which is not only very affordable but also ideal for those wanting to take a quick break during a busy day of sightseeing. Every Sunday, Josef Linz opens its doors to an amazing, 40-meter long breakfast buffet, where guests should take at least a few hours to take full advantage of the many regional and international culinary delights.

Café Bar Walker

For those who are interested in a rather unusual brunch combination, Café Bar Walker is the place to be. Traditional breakfast variations, such as Milanese or French breakfasts, are offered side-by-side with a not-so-traditional burger menu. 20 burgers, four of which are vegetarian options, are on offer and make for a welcome change in the usual routine of brunches.

Located on the third floor of the Ars Electronica Centre, which is the prototype of the modern, trendy and young Linz, Cubus fits right into this concept. It’s impressive with its modern design, large glass façade and extravagant rooftop bar. The breakfast options, which also include a vegan breakfast, are complemented by a range of sandwiches, salads and other all snacks. The café also engages in various cultural events with local artists and regularly proposes ecial treats, such as a BBQ big band brunch.

Ängus picked up the growing demand of brunch places in and around Linz and decided to offer something different to its guests. A weekly jazzy steak brunch, consisting of a rich brunch buffet, steaks cooked to order for a unique taste, and tempting desserts, is the innovative result. Local jazz artists and bands are commissioned to accompany the Sunday brunch in the background.
