Ask anyone where to go in Europe first and chances are they’ll say the ‘Venice of the North’. Why, you ask? Well just look at it:
Known for its compact core and atmospheric cobbled lanes, you never know what you might stumble upon here: hidden squares, secret gardens, countless jenever distilleries, a weed cafe – as cliché as it sounds, the possibilities really are quite endless.
Luckily for all, Amsterdam is a city for walkers. Here, you can easily wander into the past and experience that famous Dutch gezelligheid (cosiness). From the Royal Palace all the way down to the Anne Frank Huis, there’s no sense of urgency here. It’s a city of carelessness, a place where it’s easy to lose yourself in a café or trendy bar totally guilt-free.
And let’s not forget the art. Oh, the art! It’s difficult not to walk anywhere in this city and not fall topsy-turvy for an artistic masterpiece. Van Goghs, Rembrandts, Vermeers – you’ll see all the Dutch masters here at the likes of the Rijksmuseum, Museum het Rembrandthuis, Stedelijk Museum and Van Gogh Museum. And when you’ve got the urge for something absolutely out of this world, jump in a boat and head for the Hermitage Amsterdam, a treasure chest home to mega exhibits and over three million artefacts.
Sheesh, that good, huh? No wonder we decided to grab some of the city’s top Instagrammers and go on a grammin’ walking tour of Amsterdam with them. Here are some of the highlights and who knows, you might just be inspired enough to go on your very own Amsterdam adventure.
