El Tarter is one of the seven villages linked to the 210km (130mi) Grandvalira Ski Resort. Beginner and intermediate skiers will feel right at home on the green and blue runs here, while those looking for thrills can head to the El Tarter Snowpark, regarded as the best in the Pyrenees. The premier spot for solo adventurers in El Tarter offers a heated outdoor pool and jacuzzi on a mountain-view terrace. Accommodation ranges from minimalist mixed dorms – sleeping up to six – to a handful of private rooms. Sip a cold beer with your fellow travellers in the lounge, complete with bean bags and a fireplace. There’s also a garden with a barbecue for hot summer evenings. The onsite grocery store sells quality wines, pre-prepared meals, fresh fruit and veg and meat packs for the grill, plus there’s also an onsite ski rental shop.

Cyclists, look no further – this adventure-orientated three-star offers rental bikes completely free of charge throughout the summer. Winter sports fans aren’t neglected either. Once the white stuff arrives, the hotel arranges everything from gear rental and free slope transfers to snow biking. Rooms come as doubles, triples or quadruples, all with access to an indoor pool with panoramic views, two bars and an arcade games room. After skiing directly back to the hotel (no walking required), soothe your muscles in the indoor pool or the sauna. Alternatively, enjoy a massage before an aperitif in the fire-warmed bar. Looking for a self-catered pad with friends? These studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments in the town centre sleep up to six adults. The ski lift, bars and restaurants are an easy stroll from here. Each apartment features pale, minimalist decor, hardwood floors and tonnes of natural light; some even boast mountain-view balconies. Aparthotel Ona Dorada combines the privacy of apartment living with hotel-style facilities. The typically Andorran building of stone and wood is a 15-minute walk from the ski lifts in El Tarter. Inside, units sleep up to four adults, featuring decently equipped kitchens. Although, during the high season, the onsite restaurant serves crowd-pleasing dishes such as pizza and steak. Wifi is available in all apartments for an extra daily fee.

9. Euroski Mountain Resort

This enormous four-star hotel boasts double, triple and quadruple rooms on the edge of the Riu d’Incles, right in the centre of town. Tuck into the plentiful buffet breakfast before heading to the onsite ski hire shop to rent gear. Post-slope relaxation facilities comprise an indoor pool area with a jacuzzi, finnish sauna and turkish bath (for an extra fee). A free shuttle bus runs between the hotel and the El Tarter ski lift.
