Guatemala attracts a lot of backpackers, but there are also some amazing luxury hotels for when you want to treat yourself. Here are the best ones in the country.

1. Mesón Panza Verde

Boutique Hotel

Ideally located on the more peaceful side of Antigua’s bustling Fifth Avenue, Meson Panza Verde began life as one of the first European-style B&Bs in town, and since then has gone from strength to strength. With only 12 bedrooms and a pretty jasmine-scented veranda, Meson Panza Verde is ideal for travellers who prefer a more intimate hotel experience, but foodies will also be in their element here. The onsite restaurant is considered one of the best in Guatemala, and you can feast upon sumptuous cuisine in a uniquely artistic environment, as the hotel is also an art gallery.

2. Casa Palopó

Boutique Hotel

Santa Catarina Palopó isn’t a normal stop on the Lake Atitlan tourist trail, which means you’ll be able to relax, away from the backpackers. The lakeside property is the epitome of laid-back luxury, and there is an amazing pool looking over the water.

3. Laguna Lodge

Boutique Hotel

This eco-resort and nature reserve offers laid-back luxury on the shores of Lake Atitlan. The environmentally friendly lodgings offer all of the amenities you would expect, plus the property sits in its own nature reserve which you can explore at your leisure.

5. Westin Camino Real

Business Hotel

If you want to be in the thick of the Zona Viva action, the Westin Camino Real is for you. It offers a familiar American-style luxury, and is a firm favourite with business travellers and tourists alike.

6. La Lancha

Independent Hotel

Get back to nature at movie director Francis Ford Coppola’s lakeside hotel in the northern Peten department. The ecolodge is a bargain for such luxury surroundings. It’s a great spot to relax in, and it’s within easy reach of the Mayan ruins at Tikal.

7. La Reunion

If you’ve ever fancied playing a round of golf on the slopes of a volcano, La Reunion is for you. The golf course stretches over lush countryside just outside Antigua, and the plush rooms provide the perfect place to relax after a couple of good rounds.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
