Three Monkeys Hostel is one of Antigua’s newest hostels, and its fast making a name for itself as one of the best places to meet new people and have a good time. Borne out of a desire to create a fresh new place to host friends, Three Monkeys Hostel is the brainchild of two Guatemalans and one Australian. There’s a relaxed-yet-fun family ethos here, and guests are just as likely to be chilling in the garden as they are to be partying up a storm. With both deluxe private rooms as well as dorm rooms, there’s accommodation to suit most budgets, and small touches like brand new beds, free coffee and snacks and strong, hot showers make all the difference.
Jungle Party Hostel, Antigua
The name of this hostel is right on the money: Jungle Party Hostel is the place to come in Antigua if you are really looking to let loose. With two bars and plenty of bean bag-adorned chill out spots, Jungle Party Hostel offers guests the best of both worlds – a place to let your hair down, as well as to quietly recover the next day. There’s also an onsite swimming pool and a rooftop terrace bar; head up here for a drink as dusk falls to enjoy lovely views over the city and volcanoes. There are dorms and private rooms at reasonable rates, as well as a restaurant, lockers, laundry service and wifi.
Tropicana Hostel, Antigua
Situated in the centre of Antigua, Tropicana Hostel is buzzing yet relaxed, and it’s just as suited for independent travelers as groups of friends or couples. There’s a lively, always-busy bar, a good restaurant, a small but clean swimming pool and a roof terrace where you can admire sweeping volcano vistas. One outstanding feature at Tropicana is the different activities they offer at good rates: their multi-day trek through the mountains and volcanoes is popular with guests, and is a great opportunity to meet new people and make friends. There’s a TV room with films and games, and the rooms and facilities are cosy and comfortable.
Hostal Antigua, Antigua
Its name may not be that inventive, but Hostal Antigua is still one of the best hostels in the city. Smack bang in the centre of Antigua, one of the key selling point of this hostel is its vibe, which is upbeat and fun, but not so wild you won’t be able to sleep at night. The cosy common area is a good place to meet other backpackers and enjoy some beers before heading out for the night, and for a small fee you can access the swimming pool at a sister property. Amenities are good, with a laundry service, lockers, an outside terrace, a spacious communal kitchen, and lots of tour and transport options.
Hostel Casa Jacaranda
If you’re looking for a fun, friendly hostel to meet new people but you aren’t really a party animal, then Hostel Casa Jacaranda is a safe bet. Quieter and more chilled than the hostels above, it has a social, relaxed ethos and offers dorms as well as private rooms. Much of the communal vibe centres around the free salsa lessons offered a few times a week and the delicious free breakfast each morning. The common areas like the bar, TV room and outside patio are great places to chat with other guests and plan your Antiguan adventures. Hostel Casa Jacaranda is also located right in the centre of town, so it’s a great spot to be based in. Staff are welcoming and helpful – be sure to ask for their recommendations for the best tours and activities.
