The air genuinely smells of nutmeg on the spice island. But choosing to visit this tri-island nation, which also includes Carriacou and Petite Martinique, really comes down to numbers. How do 40 beaches, 30 dive sites, 15 waterfalls, five chocolate factories and three rum distilleries sound? Without further ado, these are the best hotels in Grenada for all budgets.

1. Rosa Guesthouse, Hillsborough, Carriacou

Drink lovers should head to Carriacou, the largest island in the Grenada Grenadines. Though just 12sqmi (31sqkm), and home to 8,000 people, you’ll find more than 100 rum shops. Stop and play dominoes, order some chicken or fried catch of the day and catch up on the local gossip. You’ll find Rosa’s – a simple but spotless guesthouse with bright yellow, blue and pink rooms – opposite Paradise Beach in the main town of Hillsborough. Cater for yourself using the fully-equipped kitchen.

2. Spice Island Beach Resort, St George’s

Owned and run by Sir Royston Hopkin and his family, this resort in Grenada tends to attract families and an older crowd; the luxury all-inclusive hotel is located at the quieter, southern end of the famous Grand Anse Beach. When treating yourself, it’s best to go all in. Treatments at Janissa’s Spa sound good enough to eat. Facials, massages and wraps use organic Grenadian chocolate, nutmeg, seaweed and coconut among other locally sourced tinctures. An added perk? All rooms are equipped with a voice-activated Alexa.

3. Lance Aux Epines Cottages, Prickly Bay, St George’s

With a quiet, protected bay, and spacious beach cottages, Lance Aux Epines is ideal for families looking to experience an independent Caribbean holiday, without the expense of a villa. According to owner-operator, Tim Brathwaite, the waters of Prickly Bay are always gentle and calm, making it ideal for swimming or making use of the resort’s pedal boats or kayaks. Head to the Sand Bar if you’re tired of cooking for yourself.

5. La Sagesse Hotel, St David's

Boutique Hotel, Resort

Follow the hiking trails that lead across the headlands of this secluded horseshoe-shaped bay, to find your own private snorkelling spot. The beach at la Sagesse still feels wild, with its salt pond fringed with mangroves, and crooked fringe of palms. But still, all rooms at this boutique hotel are within just 30ft (9m) of the beach. With no TVs, radios or phones in the room, rest is a priority. Dishes at the beachside restaurant use only locally caught seafood and produce grown in the nearby rainforest.

6. Bougainvillea Apartments, Grand Anse

Budget-friendly and all about the location, this quiet self-catered apartment complex in Grenada makes an easy base from which to explore. A supermarket, bank, Grand Anse beach and public transport are all just a few minutes walk away, while the airport is 3mi (5km) away. Each apartment has a full kitchen; begin your trip relaxed with a food starter pack, available on request.

7. Casabella Bed and Breakfast, Grand Anse

The view over the town and out to sea from the swimming pool at Casabella is one of the key draws of a stay here. The seven rooms are definitely homely and comfortably traditional, with cheery colours and floral furnishings. A draw to is its value and central location; St. George’s is a 10-minute drive away, while the shallow, luminous waters of Morne Rouge Beach (also known as BBC beach) are just 1.5mi (2.3km) away.

8. LaLuna Boutique Hotel, St George's
