7 Upscale and Budget-Friendly Places to Stay in Bangkok's Riverside

Updated: 30 April 2017

Visitors to Bangkok do not need to shell out thousands of baht to stay on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. From affordable guesthouses to cheap hotels, here are the most budget-friendly places to stay in Bangkok along the water.

New Siam Riverside

New Siam Guest House first opened in 1984 as a small guesthouse near Khao San Road. Today, you can choose between five different guesthouses, one of which is right on the Chao Phraya River. The New Siam Riverside is a great place to stay for those who want impeccable views but do not want to pay for them. The guesthouse is located near the Phra Pin Klao Bridge, making it easy to get from one side of the river to the next. The New Siam Riverside is also equipped with a pool, is within walking distance of the picturesque Phra Sumen Fort, and rooms start at about ฿1,490 (US$43).

Baan Wanglang Riverside, Bangkok

Baan Wanglang Riverside has some of the best views in town of the Rama VII Bridge. This quaint hotel makes guests feel as though they have traveled back to an earlier dynasty, with rustic and authentic Thai decor throughout its interior. The highlight of this hotel, besides its great prices, are the three delicious restaurants to choose from. For those wanting to dine with panoramic views of the river and see all the top sites along the banks, check out 342 Bar, located on the rooftop of the hotel.

Royal River Hotel Bangkok

Located on the western banks of the mighty Chao Phraya River is the Royal River Hotel Bangkok. It is adjacent to the Krung Thon Bridge and within walking distance of Wat Thepnaree, a Buddhist temple that is off the beaten path. With 442 rooms and suites, visitors are bound to find one within their price range. The hotel is also equipped with an outdoor swimming pool, five different dining options (including a romantic river cruise), and more. Rooms start at about ฿2,000 (US$58).

Arun Residence

The room rates at Arun Residence are a bit steeper than the other hotels on this list. The hotel’s view of the spectacular Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn) however is certainly worth the extra ฿1,000 or so. The hotel is equipped with one of the most luxurious (and affordable) restaurants in town: The Deck by Arun Residence. There is even a snack and cocktail lounge on the top floor of the building. In addition to its delectable dining options, guests are able to walk to some of the top attractions in town, including the giant reclining Buddha found in Wat Pho. There is also a boat pier within walking distance of the hotel, making it easy for guests to hop on and off the river and explore the capital. Rooms start at about ฿3,100 (US$90).

Phiman Riverview Guest House

Phiman Riverview Guest House provides guests with some of the most affordable room rates along the Chao Phraya River. The guesthouse is about as close as it can get to the Rama VII Bridge along the eastern bank of the river. It is also within walking distance of Khao San Road (about five minutes), should one desperately need a night cap. Wi-fi is only available in the living room, so expect to be disconnected during your stay here. From shared bathrooms to fans in lieu of air conditioning, the Phiman Riverview Guest House is rather basic, but for about ฿350 (US$10) per night, guests are certainly getting what they paid for. For a unique and laid-back budget stay in the city, this is the place to go.

Inn a Day

Inn a Day is on the pricier side, but when you see how each room is individually decorated with its own theme, the extra baht seem worth it. Each of the 11 rooms is decorated around a time concept, with the first (and most affordable) being Room 7 am, ‘Fresh Market. For ฿3,500 (US$101) per night, guests have a spectacular view of the river from their very own balcony, as well as a king-size bed. Guests can borrow bicycles for free, to explore the city. Ensuite bathrooms, flat-screen televisions, air conditioning… Inn a Day is about as luxurious as it gets without breaking the bank.

Kaloang Home

Located within walking distance of more than a handful of quaint temples is Kaloang Home. What began as a restaurant is now a lovely accommodation option on the river, with complimentary breakfast, air-conditioned rooms, and free Wi-fi. Double rooms start at just ฿880 (US$25) per night, and guests staying more than seven days get a slight discount. Kaloang’s onsite restaurant also has an outdoor seating area, some of which is covered along the banks. It is the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring the capital.
