The Best Backpacker Bars in Singapore

Singapore is notoriously expensive for a night out because of the high tax on alcohol compared to the rest of the surrounding region. But you can find spots with cheaper drinks and good deals if you know where to look. Here’s our list of our favourite backpacker bars with affordable booze and a good social atmosphere.

Prince of Wales Backpacker Pub

The Prince of Wales Backpacker Pub is a laid-back Aussie styled pub that’s been a mainstay of the eclectic Little India stretch and a backpacker-favourite for a long time. Chill out during Happy Hour from 9am to 9pm and enjoy its cheap booze promotions and daily live music in the beer garden. They have since opened a second outlet at Boat Quay.

Smith Street Taps

Craft beer is usually found in some hipster outlet, but Smith Street Taps is one of the few places in Singapore where you can enjoy a diverse range of draft craft beers right in the middle of busy Chinatown. The best part is it’s situated in one of Singapore’s biggest hawker centres, so you have a wide selection of cheap and authentic Singaporean street food to pair with your brew.

Five Oriental

Five Oriental at Collyer Quay in the Central Business District is probably the most popular of the Five Izakaya Bars around Singapore, notable for their all-day $5-drink promotions. Modelled after the standing bars in Japan for off-duty salarymen, their reputation for cheap drinks attracts a lot of the nearby office workers as well as the budget-conscious drinkers, so expect it to be crowded.

Ice Cold Beer

Ice Cold Beer is just what you need after a long day out. This stalwart in the Emerald Hill drinking hole is two floors set in a traditional Peranakan Shophouse and always has a great lively vibe thanks to the pool table and dart boards. Best visited during Happy Hour from 5-9pm, make sure to pair your beer with their yummy chicken wings and house pizza.

For all those times you just want to down some serious shots, Chupitos, right in the heart of nightlife central Clarke Quay, offers up over 130 different types of shots and dropshots for any sort of palate. Hood Bar and Cafe

Hood Bar and Cafe is one of the best spots in Singapore to chill out and listen to live music from a rotating schedule of local musicians. It is unapologetically Singaporean, from the hodgepodge of local flavours on the menu to the Singlish drinks promos every night, which is great for anyone who wants that authentic Singapore experience.
