The 7 Best Hidden Bars in Singapore

Picture of Tarandip Kaur
Updated: 6 April 2018
If you’re searching for a good spot in Singapore for drinks, then sway away from prominent ones and head to these hidden bars instead. These forbidden fruit dens offer much more than just an alcoholic drink; they offer some of the more rare alcohol from across the world and a stylised environment that’s leaps and bounds away from the norm.

Priding itself as,”..the first and only place on earth, where all the different spirits are created in-house by the art of finishing…”, this is an establishment inspired by the infamous Prohibition era in the United States. It has a very dimly lit, antiquated atmosphere and a location that is easy to miss unless you’re in the know. This is by no means all show and no filler, as the drinks are concocted by brilliant mixers and leave you with a sublime experience that seemingly survived the ages.

-Let's "Shuck all Night"!!! The bar is all polished and sexy 😍-

Looking like something dragged out of the back alleys of Ginza in the ’60s, The Horse’s Mouth can be a daunting experience if it’s your first time there. The drinks are straight to the point with some crafty mixes with cute local names like ‘Ya-ya Papaya’, and they utilise fine alcoholic beverages for those who like it straight. If you’re hungry, the bar is linked to Uma Uma Izakaya restaurant, so you can get your favourite Japanese cuisine as well.

Here’s a hidden bar that became famous after being named Asia’s Best Bar in 2016, according to the esteemed Drinks International magazine. Nonetheless, 28 HongKong Street has still maintained its low-key, tempered persona and maintained its strength at crafting excellent, tailored libations in a cool East Coast American-accented setting. In fact, despite the name, the New York mood is really strong with the music and style of drinks.

Located right smack in Chinatown itself, this underground watering hole is led by Luke Whearty, its very own Cerberus-like figure whose involvement at every step has given Operation Dagger its acclaimed reputation. It’s easily one of the more hard-to-find find bars in Singapore, due to an unnamed building, an eerie walk down a stairwell and having to identify symbolic clues to be sure you are where you should be. What you can expect are some of the more intricate and innovative mixes of cocktails you will find in Singapore, made from mysterious bottles on the shelves, which are labelled with what one would describe as indecipherable scribbles.

Bringing together some of the more bespoke brands of spirits sourced from the United States, this is a nifty place to go for the chance to explore some really rare and small batch moonshine, including one that is called ‘World’s Best Moonshine’. You’re talking about distilleries that are neither mainstream nor owned by passionate brewers with few if any workers. Not for the faint of heart, this joint is for the very particular in taste or those who fancy themselves a connoisseur of classic American spirits.

A cross between turn-of-the-century Cherleston uproar and Moulin Rouge excess, this nifty little spot is quite a find once you walk past the Oriental floral-themed door. They pride themselves on their delicate take on cocktails, which are carefully prepared according to your whims. The massive collection of gin and other liquors they stock additionally show the effort they put in making sure you leave in absolutely high spirits, if not a little hangover the following day.

Perfect space for vintage lovers | © Oxwell & Co.
If old-school New York or Tokyo or even Singapore do not satisfy, then you might want to turn your clocks back further for something more medieval at The Apothecary. Be prepared for this rather furtive nook located in what is generally an uproarious Ann Siang Hill that has space only for 12 patrons. The whole area looks like something out of an alchemists’ lab, with bolted glass bottles labelled after obscure maladies, probably hinting to alcohol as the great medicine. They offer a very small selection of cocktails but this is by design to attest to their spirit of perfection (to cure whatever ails you) on top of their peculiar vibe.
