Manila is a hectic city. Between food crawls in the Chinatown of Binondo, tramping around Rizal Park and admiring colonial Intramuros, you’ll undoubtedly flag. So it’s nice to book a holiday apartment and have somewhere homely to stay, where you can chill out, work out or make noodles at 10pm – whatever you need to do once your day in the Philippine capital is done.

Ascott BGC is next door to Google’s Manila outpost, so rest assured you’re in a lively, forward-thinking neighbourhood. The super modern studios and apartments have all the necessary accoutrements – kitchen, dining and lounge areas, and a washing machine – with the benefits of a luxury hotel, such as a sparkling outdoor pool, a top-notch gym and room service. Kids and big kids alike will love the interactive Mind Museum, just around the corner.

The Alabang streets form concentric circles, radiating out from the main attraction in the district: Festival Supermall. Somerset Alabang sits directly within its orbit (just a five-minute walk away), and the poolside bar and cosy studios are the perfect place to unwind after a spot of retail therapy. If shopping’s not your thing, you might like the mountain-bike trails that slice through the sliver of parkland a few streets away.

Don’t miss the chance to soak up skyscraper views from the swimming pool and hot tub. Here on the weekend? Save time (and your appetite) for a wander around Salcedo Saturday Market in the tiny park a few streets away, where you’ll find anything from coconut kefir and freshly baked croissants to barbecued bangus (milkfish).

Alpha Suites is certainly top dog in Makati – particularly if you’re into health and fitness. As well as a huge lagoon-style pool, fitness classes and a gym, there are tennis and basketball courts, a boxing ring and even a virtual golf simulator. There are nine international restaurants, a rooftop jazz bar and a wellness centre offering detox drips and hyperbaric chamber treatments. Alpha amenities indeed.

6. Citadines Bay City Manila

The studios and apartments at Citadines Bay City feature comfy beds, blue and taupe textiles and kitchenettes. The hotel is within W Mall, making grocery shopping a doddle. There’s an outdoor pool and sundeck for lazy afternoons, but if you really want to indulge, book an in-room massage. The Mall of Asia and the entertainment hub of Seaside Boulevard are just 1.5km (1mi) away.

Looking for a home away from home in one of the coolest corners of Manila? Head to Poblacion, the gentrified old town of Makati, and make Aruga by Rockwell your base. The aparthotel features luxury self-catering suites plus a gym and outdoor pool, and is close to some of the trendiest restaurants and art galleries in the city. Visit Pineapple Lab to see exhibitions and performances by local artists before craft beer and cocktails at Polilya.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
