Ikebukuro is a neighborhood in Toshima and the main commercial hub of the ward. As a result, it is the liveliest neighborhood. With theaters and shopping centers to cafes and restaurants, the area has the most entertainment for visitors to choose from.
Sugamo’s Jizo-dori is a famous shopping street. It’s nicknamed “Grandmas’ Harajuku” or “Old Ladies’ Harajuku” because of the large number of elderly people who visit. The shops and services also tend to cater to the older population.
Koganji Temple may be partly responsible for Jizo-dori’s popularity with the elderly. The Togenuki Jizo statue which is situated at the temple, is thought to have healing powers. It’s customary to symbolically wash the statue, and people can be seen pressing the towel to their ailing limbs in the hopes the statue’s power will rub off on them. Koganji Temple hosts a small festival each month on the 4th, 14th and 24th.
Sunshine City is a multipurpose complex, an interconnected mini-city similar to Tokyo Midtown and Roppongi Hills. It’s also the largest shopping center in Toshima. The Pokemon Centre’s flagship store can be found here along with the Sunshine City Aqaurium, Namco Namja Town amusement park and Ancient Orient Museum.
The Sky Circus Sunshine 60 Observatory is located on the 60th floor of Sunshine City. It calls itself an experience based observatory and includes a couple of interactive and virtual reality experiences.
Nagasaki Shrine is best known for hosting the lion dances (shishimai) on the second Sunday of May each year.
Mejiro Teien is a public garden in Mejiro, Toshima. The garden is designed with traditional Japanese elements. The flowers, shrubs and trees were specifically chosen so that there would almost always be something in bloom no matter what the season.
