Sugamo’s Jizo-dori is a famous shopping street. It’s nicknamed “Grandmas’ Harajuku” or “Old Ladies’ Harajuku” because of the large number of elderly people who visit. The shops and services also tend to cater to the older population.

Koganji Temple

Koganji Temple may be partly responsible for Jizo-dori’s popularity with the elderly. The Togenuki Jizo statue which is situated at the temple, is thought to have healing powers. It’s customary to symbolically wash the statue, and people can be seen pressing the towel to their ailing limbs in the hopes the statue’s power will rub off on them. Koganji Temple hosts a small festival each month on the 4th, 14th and 24th.
