Artist Ali Sabet travels to Japan quite often as a frequent participant in the Tokyo International Art Fair. This year, he opted to stay in an Airbnb in the trendy Shibuya neighbourhood and was presented with a super quirky request by his host.
Shockingly, the apartment’s owner, who is Canadian, actually emailed Ali asking him if he would be willing to leave a special souvenir behind in the flat.
The host was a big fan of Ali’s distinctive artwork and wanted him to unveil his creative magic on one of the walls. In exchange, Sabet’s stay would be free and he would be welcomed back at no charge anytime he was visiting the city.
Ali’s artistic style fit the bill culturally as well, as he paints with Japanese brushes and Sumi ink.
Unsurprisingly, the artist was happy to oblige. He wrote back to his host Eric, stating ‘I’d be honored to create in your home and accept your wonderful offer. I’ll also create and leave an original piece for you to frame and hang anywhere you like.’
Eric was super happy with his decision and with his incredible new wall.
What a bargain for both parties! Should we all be investing in some paint?
