Little is known about its unexplored depths, so it’s spawned a load of fantastical local legends.

According to some folk, elders used to tell stories of fairies adding the colours of sapphire and jade to river. The result? Its glittering and very unique shade of blue.

Some people go even further though, and say the river is haunted by all sorts of scary supernatural beings and enchantresses, which have left a load of charms and hexes to protect the place from us humans.

Known as the engkantos (the environmental witches of the river), local fisherman even say that it’s almost impossible to catch a fish through any means – and trust us, they’ve tried every way imaginable.

What’s even more peculiar is that the salt water river appears to have no source whatsoever.

Some think the idyll is connected to the nearby Pacific ocean by a network of secret caves, tunnels and caverns – but most people agree the fairy story is much cooler.
