Ubud is known worldwide for its thriving yoga scene and spiritual vibes. People come here to relax and sip on yummy cacao drinks. However, there’s more to Ubud than being healthy. The buzzing town, perched in the luscious Balinese highlands, has an ample choice of cool bars to discover. Go on, indulge a little.

The classic bar to go with friends for neverending late night chats. The vibes are casual, usually loud with live band music. It’s the perfect place to shout out loud and let the fun win over the stress. No màs means no more, funny because what we hear in a bar is usually one more! That’s exactly what people end up asking the bartender here at No Màs: “Give me one more Bloody Mary with fried chicken leg add-ons, please!”

3. The Sayan House

Cocktail Bar, Restaurant, Wine Bar, Fusion, Japanese, South American, Central American

Imagine sipping on a delicious homemade Sangria on a wooden terrace overlooking the lush Balinese jungle? That’s The Sayan House in a nutshell. A dreamy restaurant and bar proposing unique Japanese Latin fusion dishes accompanied by a breathtaking view on the Ayung river gorge, in the north-west part of Ubud. Pro-tip: going at sunset time, around 5pm and 6pm, tops up the drinks with golden lights and a dreamy ambiance.

5. IBU SUSU

Bar, Cocktail Bar, Asian, Fusion, Seafood

After five years in Melbourne, Ketut, co-owner and head bartender, is back to Bali to create cocktails that fill hearts and souls with sheer joy. IBU SUSU Bar & Kitchen opens at noon and serves mouthwatering Asian fusion dishes, from brunch to dinner. And the drinks. Oh, the drinks! What about a delicious Salted Caramel Espresso Martini or a Frozen Coco Matcha featuring Captain Morgan himself?

The Night Rooster is the cocktail bar of the exquisite restaurant Locavore, also located in Ubud and voted the best Indonesian restaurant in 2017. Here, Raka Ambarawan, an award-winning Balinese barman, makes his magic. The results of his alchemy are 10 rotating cocktails, based on the seasonal and locally sourced herbs, fruits and spices. For example, their “Nangke Ditebe – a.k.a. jackfruit from our backyard” is a mix of home-distilled local liqueur and fresh jackfruit. For a classic revisited try their “Nee-groni – “S**t! We forgot the Campari!”

7. Laramona Ubud

Hidden in the buzzing Jalan Dewisita, Laramona is Ubud’s little secret. The space is enclosed, with no windows, and permeated with underground vibes. It’s what it feels like to be in a bar in East London or the hipster part of Melbourne. Definitely the place to hang and listen to some good deep house tunes, with a DJ deck set up on empty petrol barrels. Their bruschetta is on point as well as the french fries topped with truffle oil. The drinks are refreshing and the ambiance is the coolest to be found in Ubud. A must.

8. Hujan Locale

Mingle is the bar next door. The one everyone thinks of when someone says “let’s go have a drink.” It’s a super casual and airy spot, located in Ubud center in the buzzing little street of Dewisita. With two floors and comfy couches, it’s also a good place to have some food, from breakfast to late dinner. The cocktails are nothing special, but well done. Here is the best thing: they have happy hour every day, meaning if you buy one cocktail you get one free. Pretty darn cool.

10. La Casita

Cocktail Bar, Mexican

Margaritas & tacos sound like an excellent recipe for a fun night in Ubud. La Casita, part of the group Lacalalongtime, together with Lacalaca in Semyniak and Lacasita in Canggu, is a lively buzzing spot right off the main road, Jalan Raya Ubud. The food menu and the cheeky cocktails will take you places: a little taste of Mexico while on a tropical island. Win, win.
