The city of Pondicherry (officially known as Puducherry since 2006) is one of the key tourist spots of South India. With its many colonial buildings, churches, temples and statues which, combined with the beautiful French-style avenues from when it was under French rule, still preserve much of the colonial ambiance. As such, dozens of beautiful cafés and restaurants have sprouted up, many on rooftops or with shaded patios, so tourists and locals alike can bask in the fuzzy Indian air with their cup of morning Masala chai. Here are the ten best places to go for late breakfast or brunch in this charming Indian city.

Café des Arts

Café des Arts was established in 1880 and everything about this wonderful café is colonial styled. Located in the heart of French quarters, Café des Arts aims to bring something new on the table for their guests with their innovative brunch combinations and quick bites. Café des Arts consists of an art library which is a must-see other than gorging down on their famous French Baguette with their home-made jam and butter. The simple and colonial seating areas give a homelike feel to the place and the visitors can enjoy their brunch indoors or in their garden.

The Pasta Bar Venito

The Pasta Bar Venito is an amalgamation of quirky and elegance all in one go. Serving the best of Italian food to their guests, The Pasta Bar Venito is a favorite amongst the Italian food lovers. The Restaurant at Villa Shanti

The most ‘welcoming the morning sunshine’ way to have brunch is in Villa Shanti, a 19th century house in the French town now converted into an award-winning hotel. With their simplistic décor and natural environment, the ambience inevitably soothes and freshens up the mind and body before the day starts. Serving the best of their brunch with organic ingredients, the food at Villa Shanti is wallet-friendly as well as being truly delicious. If you fancy something lighter, just grab a fruit juice and an Indian street-food style snack at their Café Bar and settle down with a book from their library for a leisurely morning.

Rendezvous

As the name suggests, it is all about creating just the perfect ambiance for a chance meeting between two strangers or a romantic atmosphere for couples. Rendezvous, situated in the heart of Pondicherry, is a popular spot amongst tourists pausing for a quick bite on their travels and exploratory journey in the city known as the France of India. Rendezvous was the dream of Chef Vincent Mathias (sadly now passed), who founded it with the aim to create a place for people to found and solidify relationships in Pondicherry, over delicious Creole cuisine. His wife Jessica and daughters Vanessa and Valerie continue to run the café to keep his dream alive.
