A vibrant start-up culture or technology may not be the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of Kolkata. However, these impressive start-ups from the city show us why it is high time we look beyond Bangalore and Mumbai to map India’s technological future.

TaxMantra

Founded by Alok Patnia, an expert in handling taxation issues, TaxMantra was founded in Kolkata and today offers services in 100 cities across the country and abroad. The company provides a range of services for businesses and individuals including everything from online return-filing services and tax planning, to business maintenance services.

Sweethandi

Delivering the best of Bengali sweets to homes across the country, Sweethandi is yet another Kolkata-born venture that has found quick success. With tie-ups to various established and legendary sweet shops around the city, the service enables users in far away cities in the country to browse, order and indulge in the sweetest of what of Kolkata has to offer.

iKure Techsoft

This innovative healthcare service provider aims to to improve the health of India’s rural poor. The company has established a chain of Rural Health Centres (RHCs)—complete with certified doctors, accredited medicines, and diagnostic testing facility—which deliver effective care to areas least-accessed by the healthcare industry. iKure Techsoft even conducts free health camps to connect with rural communities and trains people to work with them as health workers.

Santa Delivers

Specializing in food and beverage delivery between 5pm and 3am, this food tech company, founded by a group of Kolkatan students, has seen much growth during its two years of existence. The service lets users browse and order from an area-specific menu that offers dishes from across cuisines, and then pay by cash or card.

Surgerica

Aiming to bring transparency into the country’s healthcare system, Surgerica helps customers access information about, and compare pricing for, medical treatments offered by various doctors and hospitals. The service currently has listings of more than 5000 doctors—categorized by their specializations and by treatments offered—in cities across India.

Zeroinfy

This interactive education platform lets students prep for a range of exams and courses such as medical entrance examinations and chartered accountancy, through video courses, personal mentoring and more. The service also encourages peer to peer learning by letting students share their notes etc. With tie-ups to teachers from around the city, Zeroinfy has been gaining much traction among the country’s students.

This healthcare start-up lets users browse and make healthcare appointments in addition to letting them store their medical records online. Offering services in a range of cities around the country, this Kolkata-based company even lets users get medical opinions online and subscribe to customized health tips. Tiyo also offers sample collection services from users’ doorsteps—all you need to do is make a few clicks on their smartphone app.
