As autumn rolls around, the temperature in Hong Kong drops from unbearably hot to pleasantly warm – which means there’s no excuse for not going out to enjoy everything this great city has to offer. From art exhibitions to concerts to sporting competitions and wine tastings, here’s what’s in store for Hong Kong in October.

ART | Where Can The Dust Alight

📅 Saturday, October 1st – Saturday, November 12th

This group exhibition presented by the Pace Gallery investigates the influence of Zen Buddhist thought through visual art. Artists featured include Hong Hao, Liu Jianhua, Song Dong, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Zhang Huan.

MUSIC | Hom Shenhao Live in Hong Kong

Hom Shenhao, an indie singer-songwriter from Taiwan, is coming to Hong Kong once again following the release of his third solo album, <Cancer>.

DANCE | A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Royal New Zealand Ballet

OPERA | Verdi’s Otello

Inspired by Shakespeare’s play, Verdi’s Otello is a powerful depiction of a doomed man. This production of the tragic opera is directed by Maurizio Di Mattia and is conducted by the award-winning maestro Gianluca Martinenghi.

COMEDY | An Evening With Jeff Green

FESTIVAL | New Vision Festival

This biennial festival organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department features a diverse lineup of artistic genres. Opening the festival is Matsukze, a dance opera from the renowned German choreographer Sasha Waltz.

SPORT | 4th International Hong Kong Beach Water Polo Tournament

📅 Saturday, October 22nd – Sunday, October 23rd

This weekend sports festival is bound to make a splash. It will be held in Hong Kong’s iconic Repulse Bay Beach and is free and open to anyone who wants to head down for some fun in the sun.

Tickets: Free to attend, $600 to play ($250 for those aged below 18)

ART | Hong Kong Art Week

The Hong Kong Art Gallery Association presents Hong Kong Art Week 2016, featuring over 100 free exhibitions and events, including talks, art tours and more. All events are free except the Gallery Walk.

The largest independently run TED event in Hong Kong, TEDxWanChai is in its sixth year. This year, a diverse lineup of speakers including leaders, artists and entrepreneurs will explore the theme ‘Crossroads’.

THEATRE | Secret Theatre Project

The internationally-acclaimed Secret Theatre Project is back in Hong Kong after another run of sell-out shows. This mysterious theatrical production keeps everything about its show under wraps, so you never know what’s in store. Once you get your ticket, you’ll receive a password and an invitation with the address of the show’s secret venue.

CHARITY | Sedan Chair Race

📅 Sunday, October 30th

This annual fundraising event for the Sedan Chair Charities Fund aims to support small, lesser-known local charities. Teams of eight runners and one passenger (usually dressed in colorful costumes) will race along a two kilometer route along the Peak carrying a sedan chair. Anyone is welcome to send a team, so go ahead and register!
