Updated: 9 February 2017
Located in the north-west of Hong Kong Island, Sheung Wan lies between Central and Sai Ying Pun. It was one of the earliest places where the British settled, and features many cultural points of interest such as Man Mo Temple, Pak Tsz Lane Park, the Western Market and the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences. However, the food available is certainly something to take note of too. Here are 10 of the best restaurants in the area.

Chachawan Thai Issan Food

Chachawan is famous for providing Issan cuisine from Thailand, which consists of raw, down-to-earth food that is rarely found in other regions. They focus on fresh Thai salads and grilled meat and fish – prepared on a charcoal pit – which hold a balanced flavor of sour, spicy and salty. The interior is just like an old school shop house, with bursts of color to match the food, raw textures of metal, concrete and vintage raw wood mingled with street art to create an epic mural – all designed by Hong Kong artist Cara To.

Bonhuer is famous for the use of fresh ingredients in their dishes. If you’re looking to indulge in some fine dining, the oysters offered are top-notch and delicious with the added benefit of being served by staff who have extensive knowledge of the dishes, ingredient origins and methods of preparation. The lighting is dim with strategically placed candles for a more intimate mood, giving you a peaceful dining experience.

The Lot On Possession

An Italian restaurant, famous for its special burgers. Wait, what? The Lot on Possession serve 14 different types of burgers, ranging from chicken, beef, fish and vegetables. Even if opting for the most basic burger option, you’ll be treated to grilled wagyu, jack cheese, relish and fresh greens on the side. Healthy and flavorful food is their mission, and their burgers are a strong contender to the carb-fest.

Three Monkeys

With a focus on Japanese cuisine, the Three Monkeys provides an amazing selection of cocktails and beers, as well as eye-catching homestyle meals. Spread over two levels, the contemporary design throughout the restaurant embraces a laid-back industrial-chic style with white-washed brick walls, retro lamps, unpolished concrete flooring and timber and steel framed chairs.

Crafty Cow

The most noticeable thing about Crafty Cow is that they do not focus purely on one type of cuisine; they have collected ideas and tastes from all over the world to infuse native flavors they experienced during their childhood years abroad. You can choose from a number of dishes such as chipotle oxtail ‘chili’, Spanish duroc pork, Aussie wagyu flat iron and rocky mountain oysters for your culture fusion experience.

Grassroots Pantry

It’s all in the name. Grassroots Pantry is a home-style restaurant offering food with fresh ingredients and at a high culinary standard within luxurious green setting. With specialties such as quinoa salad, sweet potato fries and a digestion booster smoothie you can’t help but feel super healthy when dining here. However, they don’t just serve food, as this is also a place where the art of fine hospitality is represented. Though not a traditional Indian restaurant, Masala is again one of those places favored by British expats, and is usually packed during lunch hours. They have great staff who are punctual and provide excellent services, plus the curries and fresh naan are to die for. So, “don’t worry, eat curry”.

For Kee

A hidden gem in Sheung Wan, For Kee is not known by many people. It’s housed in a small building, typical of a Hong Kong style tea cafe, that serves some of the most traditional Chinese dishes. It’s hard to not come across pork chop rice in a Chinese restaurant, but For Kee’s version is definitely up there with the best of the best as it is tender, flavorful and avoids artificial ingredients.

ABC Kitchen

The name for ABC Kitchen derives from the phrase “a better cooking kitchen”. Though not a fine-dining experience, at times it’s nice to get back to basics and this place is truly full of surprises. It’s a great spot for those who love to eat pork, and the suckling pig offered here is delicious.
