Falling on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, this is the time when restless spirits are said to roam the earth. The ideas behind the festival are similar to those of Halloween in Europe, but with the added element of ancestor worship.
One of the main highlights of the Hungry Ghost Festival are the Chinese operas that are usually held during this time; these are performed in order to worship and send praise to the Chinese deities. Traditional activities and customs include burning incense, distributing free rice and burning fake money to send on to their ancestors in the afterlife.
