Bibo

Allegedly a portmanteau of ‘bilingual’ and ‘bohemian’ Bibo is the newest addition to Hong Kong’s French fare circuit. More than just a restaurant, this place is a multi-functional venue acting as an art space, restaurant and bar. The décor is perhaps the most intriguing and engaging aspect of Bibo, having drafted in a collection of big names in contemporary art and street art to create a much talked about interior. In this way Bibo has definitely delivered, boasting walls adorned by none other than Damien Hirst and Banksy, and sculptures by Takashi Murakami. The food is not to be overshadowed by the environment in which it is served, as this too is of the highest quality. Executive Chef Mutaro Balde concocts French gourmet cuisine in his kitchen to produce favorites such as the sea bass roasted over ratatouille.

Chez Patrick

Patrick Goubier is the passion and talent behind Hong Kong’s most trusted traditional French restaurant. Born and bred in France, the premise of Patrick’s establishment is to bring home cooking from the hills of Lyon to the bustling streets of Asia. The affectionate name Chez Patrick, meaning Patrick’s place, sets the tone for the ambiance of his restaurant, which is inviting and homely. The dining area is decorated in the style of a grand, almost aristocratic European living room with remarkable detailed, hand painted gold wallpaper. Making yourself at home is an order and even Patrick himself likes to venture out of the kitchen to interact with his valued customers. Choose from signature dishes such as the Foie Gras Trio, or all time classics like the Chateaubriand black Angus.

Gaddi’s

Rooted in Hong Kong’s colonial past, Gaddi’s continues to serve exceptional European fare to visitors and diners of the legendary Peninsula Hotel. The hotel has been a key component in many of the city’s most crucial historical moments, including the place of surrender to the Japanese at the end of the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941. A decade later, Gaddi’s was inaugurated as one of the first restaurants to bring a taste of the continent to Hong Kong. Everything from the antique silverware to the extravagant artwork firmly secures Gaddi’s as an experience of pure luxury. Chef Remi Van Peteghem prides himself on being able to change people’s food tastes entirely after they have simply sampled some of his signature dishes, which include the roasted vendéen pigeon breast and wild turbot from the Brittany coast.

Club Chow

Serving up an Italian-French fusion cuisine in an unassuming venue in the trendy neighborhood of Sheung Wan is Club Chow. A slightly misleading name for a French restaurant, Club Chow was born from a mix of the slang term for ‘comfort food’ and an ode to Head Chef Simon Chow. A lobster-heavy dinner menu at Club Chow includes lobster cioppino, lobster risotto, lobster thermidor and whole Boston lobster – a feast to remember. The restaurant also raises the stakes as one of the city’s most reputable spots with its extensive Italian, French and German wine list, which has been paired with Simon’s dishes by an expert sommelier.

SPOON by Alain Ducasse

Since its inauguration in 2003, SPOON by Alain Ducasse at the Intercontinental Hotel has been awarded two Michelin stars and has been cited on countless restaurant lists and guides, including in the Forbes Travel Guide as a five-star winner. The concept behind the restaurant is to use ingredients sourced from France and local vendors to use in Chef Ducasse’s varied repertoire of cooking techniques. Alain Ducasse’s idea was to create dishes which stayed true to traditional French flavors and methods, while minimizing some of the extravagance often associated with French fare. The interior of the restaurant was designed to reflect Ducasse’s values and vision; keeping an elegant and sophisticated vibe without a feeling of pretentious formality.

La Cabane

La Cabane is an authentic French bistro located on Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan; Hong Kong’s closest thing to the quaint streets of Paris. La Cabane Bistro, the sister of La Cabane a Vin, a specialist wine cellar, is set in a rustic environment which mimics a charming French chalet. The food is served up in small portions, much like tapas, to be eaten as a light snack or to be ordered a few at a time for a more robust meal. Platters of cold cuts and French cheeses are popular choices. Accompany these with a tipple from the temperature-controlled wine cellar to fully immerse yourself in the French way of feasting.

Les Fils à Maman is the product of a personal journey taken by four childhood friends who turned their shared passion for reliving childhood memories and the local food of their homeland into an adult playground. The retro-vibe transports many on a trip down memory lane with relics from the 1980s, including vintage radios and photographs. Expect the food to be professionally executed, yet prepared with the love and attention of home cooking, thanks to the shared secrets of the founders’ mothers.
