Step inside and you’ll forget that you’re in the midst of the towering skyscrapers that make up the metropolitan city as the interior décor, consisting of Polynesian elements, will provide you with a means of escape to an exotic getaway – through the senses. With an impressive bar made up of timber and bamboo elements, combined with a luscious terrace adorned with greenery, it’s the ideal setting for after-work beers with colleagues or weekend cocktails with the girls.
Honi Honi offers an extensive menu of beers, wine, and spirits (especially rum), but their cocktails are pretty spectacular too, and this month, there’s a special focus on not only one but the two original Mai Tai recipes available to try. These are classic tiki tipples that are perfectly refreshing for the hot and humid Hong Kong summer, but the question is: which is best?
There’s been an age-old debate regarding who was the original creator of the classic – not your bottled pre-mixes – Mai Tai. Some say Don the Beachcomber, while others say Trader Vic. Nevertheless, Honi Honi offers both versions of the classic drink for you to enjoy.
First, there’s the Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai – a classic cocktail comprising of Flor de Caña 4 Year Old Extra Dry Rum, Myers Dark Rum, a homemade Falernum liqueur, lime juice, Angostura Bitters, sugarcane sugar and a dash of Absinthe. It’s strong without being overpowering, and sweet without making you worry about how many fillings you’ll end up with. The balance of citrus flavors to rum ratio is perfect, and the added Absinthe gives the cocktail that extra kick for those who like their drinks on the stronger side.
The alternative is the Trader Vic Mai Tai made with Angostura 3 Year Old Rum, J.M. White Rhum, Grand Marnier, lime juice, Angostura Bitters and orgeat syrup (a sweet syrup usually made from almonds, sugar and either rose water or orange flower water). This is much sweeter than the Don the Beachcomber version but again, not overpoweringly so, and ideal for those looking for that easy-to-drink cocktail that is simply fruity, tropical and sweet.
It’s unique, it’s relaxed, and they have some extraordinary tropical cocktails to indulge in. Go treat yourself to some tiki vibes.
