The Tianjin tea house art of Crosstalk

The one thing that distinguishes Tianjin’s best tea houses from its counterparts around China is “Crosstalk”, or xiangsheng. Originating in Tianjin, Crosstalk is a spoken, masterful comedic performance that uses the local dialect and content that is derived from traditional Chinese pieces and current affairs commentary. Non-Mandarin speakers will still appreciate Crosstalk performances just for their pure jokey sound.

Mingliu Teahouse

The premiere, traditional folk culture tea house chain in Tianjin, this is the place to come to witness live Crosstalk. The Mingliu Teahouse showcases the Tianjin-grown comedy style. Expect to see some of China’s most venerable performers at one of their multiple locations in the city. First built in 1991 and designed by the wife of Lao She, a famous Chinese writer, this teahouse’s fame was driven by traditional folk culture. No meals are served here, only tea, coffee, and snacks. Nevertheless, locals, expats, and tourists can all be found enjoying the show and teas. Ticket are 80 RMB ($12) Book at least two days in advance!

China Drama Tea House

Providing a more elegant Chinese tea experience, this classic Chinese courtyard harks back to the Tang and Han dynasty eras. The China Drama Tea House is the site of famous paintings, calligraphy, vintage furniture, classic musical instruments, and Kungqu Opera. Pavilions and galleries occupy the first floor, and the upper floor boasts separate private rooms. Not easily found, ask a local for directions.

Qian Xiang Yi Tea House

The notable Qian Xiang Yi building (a famous cultural relic that is actually listed under a protection act) is home to its very own vintage tea house. Like many structures in Tianjin the building combines Western and Chinese styles. Look out for intricate decorations fused with natural-looking patterns as you sip tea among the vintage chambers of Qian Xiang Yi.

Another tea house hidden inside an old structure, Lao Cheng Xiao Li Yuan is tucked away inside Old City Museum. It boasts a long history of over one hundred years and is one of the best-preserved tea houses in downtown Tianjin. Enjoy “si he yuan“, folk art performances as you have your tea.
