The Rooster

Bar, Restaurant, American, Pub Grub, $$$
Save to wishlist

Cheap prices, great vibes, and awesome events make The Rooster one of Jing’an District’s best bars. There are lots of delicious beers on tap, like those from Beijing brewery Jing A, Cider Republic, Dead Guy, and more. Cocktails are solid as well and they also run one of the best brunch deals in town!

Cheers to the Rooster.m🐔 #happybdayB #theroostershanghai

The Hop Project

Bar, American, Pub Grub, $$$
Save to wishlist

The Hop Project is another great, economical imbibing option. They first opened as a small pop up on Shanghai’s old bar street Yongkang Rd. but have since grown into their new location on Dagu Rd. There’s a large outdoor area with seating for when the weather is nice, and they serve up fresh grilled cheese sandwiches from Co. Cheese.

Is it too early? #nevertooearly #TheHopProject

Tailor Bar

Bar, Cocktail Bar, Pub Grub, $$$

You have to know what you’re looking for in order to find Tailor Bar, a speakeasy across from Jing’an Temple famous for its world-renowned mixologists. The entrance is through an elevator with a sign indicating traditional Chinese medicine upstairs. In classic speakeasy fashion, there is no menu at Tailor Bar. Simply tell a bartender what you want your cocktail to taste like, and he will make it for you.

Revolucion Cocktail 2

Bar, Cocktail Bar, Pub Grub, $$$
Save to wishlist

Revolucion is another bar that started out on Yongkang Rd. With its new location, Revolucion has transformed itself from a chilled cocktail bar to a happening dance spot. There is significantly more space in the new venue, but perhaps not enough for all the attention it’s been getting. On weekends, bartenders like to light the bar on fire and create other fun spectacles for the dancers. Music is poppy.

Tour

Bar, Pub Grub, $$$
Save to wishlist

At Tour, nearly everything is edible, even the menus. Made from rice paper, the menu can be folded up as a sort of taco shell for finely chopped peanuts, mint chutney, or Hershey’s chocolate. Every cocktail also comes with a paired snack. The Negroni comes with grilled cheese, the whisky sour a lemon tart, and the Citrus Paradisi a scoop of baked coconut ice cream. But be warned prices err on the higher side.

Dope Shifu

Bar, Pub Grub, $$$
Save to wishlist

Dope Shifu is painfully cool. The tatted bartenders will give good service while seeming like they just don’t care, and the clientele mostly look like they arrived on skateboards. Please don’t go for the food. It’s not great at all. The drinks, on the other hand, are delicious, and cheap. You can either sit outside by the walk up bar, or hole yourself up in the concrete interior, depending on which vibe you’re going for.

Today's office. Hanging out in our #downtownoffice for some after office hours planning. #dopeshifu

Le Cafe des Stagiaires

Bar, Pub Grub, $$$
Save to wishlist

Le Cafe des Stagiaires, meaning the Interns’ Cafe in French, is a Shanghai expat staple. Mostly attracting the city’s numerous Gallic residents, Le Cafe des Stagiaires is relaxed and always sure to give you a good time. The liquors on offer are plentiful. Culture Trip recommends classic Parisian favorite Get 27, a monster green, mint-based liqueur.

Dogtown

Bar, Pub Grub, $$$
Save to wishlist

Just down the street from The Rooster is tiny walk-up bar Dogtown. Run by the same company as Sumerian Coffee and Boom Boom Bagels, Dogtown attracts a young crowd with its frequent block parties and drink specials. This is definitely the place to be on major American holidays, and, as the name suggests, a great place to bring your dog and grab a beer.

The Shed is a popular Sports bar on any given night, but becomes packed on Wednesday nights when they throw down cheap chicken wings. Expect good deals every night of the week, though, and plenty of TVs to catch the latest international sporting event.

Kartel

Bar, Wine Bar, French, $$$
Save to wishlist

Casual French wine bar Kartel offers one of the best rooftop views in Shanghai. The whole place feels very warm, with wooden floors, exposed brick, and communal tables. Pair your wine with a French dish off of the bar’s substantial food menu. Happy hour prices are on offer every day from 6-8pm.
