The Messi Experience Park (MEP) is scheduled to open in Nanjing, China, in early 2019. The park, which will boast more than 20 attractions, will utilize technology, specifically augmented reality and virtual reality, so visitors can “immerse themselves [in] all things Messi.”
The theme park has been in development for two years with Phoenix Group and Grupo Mediapro working closely with Leo Messi Management.
According to a statement: “The MEP project, which is based around an original concept, features the most cutting-edge technology, enabling visitors to immerse themselves in all things Messi by combining the latest-generation attractions with areas in which to play football and thanks to the very best advances in content and multimedia attractions, all of which come together to create a fine natural environment in which to enjoy the sport.”
The AR/VR will be utilized to showcase highlights of Messi’s storied career as well as let visitors train with a Virtual Reality Messi.
Messi was in Beijing for the launch and said he hopes the park will motivate visitors to play soccer.
“I hope to provide them with an experience they’ve never had before and to inspire them to pick up the sport early on,” he told reporters. “Hopefully, they will feel that I am around when visiting the park.”
