How Instagrammer Brad Hales Captured The Soul Of Shanghai

Originally hailing from Australia, Brad Hales has built an incredible collection of Instagram images that capture change happening throughout Shanghai. Affectionately referring to Shanghai as his second home, he freely admits that his passion for unusual angles in photography has seen him exploring many of Shanghai’s high-rise rooftops. We’ve selected some of our favorite snaps from his pages, a beautiful collection of everything it means to live in, and love, Shanghai.

A Shanghai shifu makes his move in the streets.

All walks of Shanghai life are shown on Hales’ Instagram, including the busy work life of many locals.

In contrast to the bustle of Shanghai streets, pockets of nature are found throughout the city, and in Hales’ photography.

Dawn breaks over a group of tai chi practitioners with Pudong’s famous skyline towering in the background.

A small oasis of nature in Xuhui gives a completely removed atmosphere.

One of Shanghai’s kite flyers prepares to spend an afternoon along the riverfront.

Stunning view of sunrise over the Huangpu.

Pudong’s immense presence is undeniable as ant-like spectators mill at the base of the Oriental Pearl Tower.

Colors and unique angular intersections bring an interesting aspect to Shanghai’s busy roads and neighborhoods when seen from above.

Shanghai’s unquenchable thirst for growth and development are mirrored in a busy mosaic of high-rise complexes.

A perfect blend of Shanghai’s past and present. This unreal closeness with Jinmao Tower demonstrates art deco aesthetics with an ultra-modern Lujiazui address.
