DAFF, also known as the Design, Art and Fashion Fair, is inviting everyone to get creative along the Xuhui riverside, West Bund, Shanghai, between 7 and 8 June. During the event, a giant industrial cement plant will be transformed into a lively, colourful and animated space with live art installations, fashion shows, pop-up shops, interactive brand activations, artist studios and workshops, music, local food and beverage, plus a few creative surprises along the way.
Headed by six artists, the global campaign #AllAroundUs asks people to look more deeply at ‘what it is that we exit in, that which surrounds us, inspires and connects us’. Here are the profiles of these cutting-edge creatives to get you prepared for the event:
Lu Yang, one of the artists heading the campaign, has derived her #AllAroundUs design from her latest controversial exhibition, The Cute Side of Cancer. Named ‘Cancer Cell’, the translation behind the design could easily be misinterpreted as negative, a pathogen of cancer that grows rapidly while disrupting the normal tissue, difficult to eliminate and bringing pain and death. From Lu Yang’s point of view, however, using bright colours, graphic design and the latest form of 3D printing technology, it has evolved into something beautiful, bright and much less scary.
Despite her young age as an artist, Lu Yang has already been described as one to watch on several occasions. Her obsession with all things biological and medical, as well as with Buddhism, make her work stands out from among her peers. Alongside her installation work and film screenings at DAFF, she’ll be situated, working creatively, in one of the Artist Studios, so be sure not to miss the opportunity to see her in action.
DaftIdea, the fun-loving Taipei-born multimedia installation artist, has also joined the #AllAroundUs campaign. For his design, he has shared his take on the process of finding the missing MH370 airplane. He explains how ‘things around us are actually the projection of self-consciousness. All events that are happening are casual relationships and an infinite loop, including our body and soul. Through what we perceive, we experience the world called ONE.’
And in this work, through the kaleidoscopic design, he shows his interpretation of the world called one through six dimensions – nature, city, art, consciousness, science and faith – associated in human life and modern civilisation. He says, ‘Just like #AllAroundUs, we observe society in detail.’
Creative pair Niu Yun (NY) and Lei Yu (Rain), of the Shanghai-based hand crafted products and photography brand Mad Hands have also teamed up to create their #AllAroundUs image. Their design shows Mad Hands’ key visual of colourful and crazy hands. It highlights their passion for transforming everyday materials using unique processes into unique and innovative designs. For the upcoming DAFF, the duo will combine fashion with art to create a fabric installation: ‘#AllAroundUs is what the Mad Hands always feel. It’s all about new creation, collaboration and inspiration from different people and culture, developing daily art imagination in the head by experiencing the exciting world around us, whether it’s old or new.’
Murals, street painting and multimedia images are Zinan Lam’s cup of tea. Zinan Lam is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Shanghai, designing his ideas in order to create a personal artistic language to tell the world. After being involved in the creation of public murals and videos, he is now taking part in our #AllAroundUs campaign in which he simply described the work as ‘magical powers, God’s protection on us’.
Qian Yong Ning
Shanghai-based photographer Qian Yong Ning, who in recent years won several international competitions, spoke to DAFF about his work on the #AllAroundUs campaign. For him, #AllAroundUs is all about the people, objects and things around us that accompany us at every moment. He says: ‘People have the most direct expression of feelings, in abstract and figurative form of expression but behind the screen it is abstract and beyond words. Although it is abstract, it is more straightforward in outpouring ideas and emotion. Therefore, we have to use our third eye to discover, uncover and taste.’ In this work, Qian Yong Ning wants to use a purely intuitive visual way of thinking and get close to things around us so as to understand them better.
