One of the best parts of going abroad is seeing what unique treasures the shelves of local supermarkets hold. Family Mart, one of the largest convenience store chains in East and Southeast Asia, is known for its excellent selection of snacks. Culture Trip has picked out 12 of these tasty treats that you can find in Shanghai. Eat up!

Originally a Japanese snack, Pocky has become popular worldwide for its fun design and delicious taste. In Shanghai Family Mart, you can find many flavors of Pocky, including chocolate, strawberry, milk, and matcha.

Huang Fei Hong Spicy Peanuts

This snack is much more inherently Chinese than Pocky. Often served as bar food, Huang Fei Hong spicy peanuts are made with Sichuanese peppers and pack a salty punch. Be careful, they’re addictive.

Wasabi Peas

Wasabi peas should not be tackled by anyone who doesn’t like a fair bit of spice. While available worldwide, the wasabi peas found in Shanghai’s Family Mart are tailored to taste buds much more used to eating spicy food. Keep that in mind, and take it as a challenge.

Chocolate Wafer Bar

Similar to many western snacks, Family Mart’s own brand of chocolate wafer bar will satisfy your sweet tooth. And when chocolate is so often expensive in the city, this is one is a great price too.

Thick Cut Nori

Another Family Mart brand favorite is thick cut nori seaweed. This salty snack melts in your mouth like the cotton candy of the sea.

Wasabi Flavored Lotus Root Chips

Lotus root is one of the first Chinese vegetables foreigners fall in love with when they come to the country. These crunchy and hearty veggies also make for the perfect snack when dried and flavored.

Prawn Crackers

Prawn crackers have many foreigners skeptical. Some people assume that seafood flavors have no place in snack food. However, Oishi brand prawn crackers don’t taste fishy. Instead, they are crisp and airy with just a hint of ocean goodness.

Brookside Blueberry and Acai Flavored Centers

Brookside is a worldwide brand that has recently become popular in the Chinese market. Several of their snacks are stocked at your local Family Mart, including chocolate covered blueberry and acai berries. Delicious and nutritious!

Lays Italian Red Meat Flavor Chips

It’s such a delight to see the Lays flavors that were created with a Chinese palate in mind. Many unique flavors of the chips are on offer at Family Mart. The best, according to many crisp connoisseurs, is the Italian Red Meat flavor, which tastes like a heavily salted steak.

Barley Yoghurt

Perfect for breakfast on the go, barley yoghurt from Family Mart comes with a spoon for those who don’t have time to grab one. The store stocks plain flavor as well as various fruity options.

Soft Serve Ice Cream

Not every Family Mart has a soft serve machine, but most of the full size ones do. For a steal, you can get ice cream in rotating flavors. Vanilla and chocolate always seem to be available, but, depending on the season, the convenience store has also been known to serve black sesame and green tea flavors.

Fruitco Berries Blend Juice

Fruit juice is a relatively new concept in China, but Shanghai has quickly gone crazy for the healthy snack drink. Instead of overpaying for juice from a cafe, try Family Mart’s Fruitco blended juices, made from the whole fruit.
