In a country that enjoys a lekker braai (a tasty BBQ) more than anything else in life, being a vegetarian is no mean feat. The majority of restaurants offer menus choc-a-bloc full of fish and meat, often with only a cursory gesture towards the vegetarians and vegans of the land. Despite this, however, there are a number of hidden veggie gems that we have collected together in one, glorious list.

Royale Eatery

An artistic, slightly alternative feeling restaurant, the Royale Eatery has an exciting, intellectual crowd. With a muddle of artists admiring the local pieces presented on the walls, journalists meeting to discuss the latest news and students making a night of it, there is a constant hubbub of interesting conversation floating around. Although not strictly vegetarian, there are a wide variety of veggie friendly options that are sure to make your mouth water. For example, their customisable vegetarian pizzas are a meat-free dream.

Sophea Gallery & Tibetan Teahouse

With a menu that offers ‘food for the body and soul’ this Tibetan themed teahouse offers an almost entirely vegetarian and vegan menu that is recommended by meat eaters too. Their sweet potato curry, a sweet and spicy taste sensation, comes highly recommended as the perfect winter warmer. As the restaurant is ideally situated to overlook the stunning False Bay, you can even sit on the sun drenched veranda and enjoy a spot of whale watching with your meal. For those whose interest in Tibetan culture is piqued by the fantastic food, there is also a small shop, gallery and sanctuary room where regular singing bowl meetings are held.

Masala Dosa

With a simplistic yet stunning inspired interior with colourful Bollywood ornamentation, Masala Dosa brings all the spice of southern Indian cuisine to the streets of Cape Town. Although the food has more of a subtle kick to it than most Capetonians are used to from their curries, the intense flavour of each dish is anything but bland. If you like choice in your meal, try their Thali; a small selection of various curries served with rice, poppadum and puri. Masala Dosa has a keen focus on healthy, vegan friendly dishes that never compromise taste or freshness.

Aniyor Bakery and Cafe

Exclusively vegetarian, this artisan bakery specializes in a range of baked goods such as pies, pastries, cake and breads that are freshly made on site every day. Open for breakfast and lunch, the café offers snacks such as sandwiches, proper salads and hot meals. If you’re feeling in the mood some greens, try their delicious roasted veg salad which is served with freshly baked rosemary and olive oil flat bread. For vegans in need of a morning snack, they do the most scrumptious vegan croissants that are margarine free.

Maharajah Pure Vegetarian Cuisine

A well loved Indian restaurant for veggies all over the cape, Maharajah’s goal is to ‘create happiness through food’ and transform the face of fast food into something that provides healthy and flavorsome meals. With a number of meals to decide over, from lighter bites such as a Butterbean Curry Wrap or something more filling such as their heavenly Palak Paneer. If these don’t fill you up, order an extra round of samosas or round off the whole feast with a vegan muffin (or three).
