Food trucks are popping up all over and have proven to be a popular choice when it comes to grabbing a bite. Whether you’re after a hearty meal or a cup of quality coffee, here’s our round up of Johannesburg’s tastiest food trucks.

Roaming Grind Coffee Co.

Roaming Grind Coffee Co., a family run business, is a mobile coffee shop serving espresso-based drinks, and known especially for their amazing frappuccinos. To get your caffeine fix find them at markets and other events all over the city, or better yet, book them for a private function.

Balkan Burger

Balkan Burger is all about adding a twist to traditional Serbian cuisine, with the Original Balkan Burger as their signature dish. Served in folded ‘somun’ bread (similar to a pita) and topped with delicious vegetables and a salad mix, this is street food at its best!

The Knickerbocker Ice Cream Company

The Knickerbocker Ice Cream Company is all about, you guessed it, artisanal ice cream, sorbet and frozen yoghurt. That isn’t, however, where the fun stops – they also serve waffles, pancakes, milkshakes, wine popsicles and sundaes. They’re the first of their kind in South Africa and their fixed parlour can be found in The Stables Village Market in Broadacres.

Bearded Fella

This is pizza like you’ve never tasted before. Bearded Fella uses imported Italian flour and homemade Napolitana sauce (made with a whole bottle of white wine) to set their menu apart from the rest. Find them on Friday’s during lunch time at The Hoods in Sandton and check out their website for upcoming events.

Treat – The Gourmet Beverage Company

Treat, previously known as Full of Beans, serves everything from coffee to frozen yoghurt, mocktails, bubble tea and cold pressed juices. This is the place to go to quench your thirst. And while you’re at it, don’t skip out on their ginger beer and lemonade.

The Brohemian

A proper wood fire inside the truck means that The Brohemian puts together some of the most mouth-watering pizzas – from classics to inventive concoctions. They serve the crowds at First Thursdays in Rosebank as well as at events around the city.

Chilli Chef

We’re talking a whole smorgasbord of delicious meals when it comes to Chilli Chef. The brainchild of Chef Dalmain Samuel, who’s worked all over the globe, this food truck serves Indian inspired dishes that bring the heat. Expect bunnychows, burgers and more!

The Filthy Moustache

Gourmet burgers and hotdogs is the name of the game when grabbing a bite to eat from The Filthy Moustache. Think the crispiest bacon you’ve ever had, loads of melted cheese and sauces galore.

Maison Belge

Maison Belge brings the best of Belgium to Johannesburg – from waffles to frites (made from Belgian potatoes) and even beer, this is a one-stop shop for everything you need to fill your hunger.

Imbuzi Café

From traditional style hamburgers to more inventive meals, Imbuzi Café has something for everyone. Their eland burger is a great combination of South African flavours. For those who like something more spicy, try the burrito. Find Imbuzi Café once a month at the Deep Roots Night Market in Pretoria and keep an eye on their Facebook page for event listings in Johannesburg.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
