Activities To Enjoy Alone In Lagos

Lagos, the second largest city in Africa, holds the unique position of being able to hold many diverse cultures and cater to the tastes of groups and individuals within its borders. Introverts and those who simply wish for some time alone have several activities to choose from that will entertain, teach, and introduce tourists to the world cultures they are surrounded by.

1. Sunsets, beaches, and great photography

Suffice to say, Lagos has a whole lot of beaches, both private and public. Take an early morning trip to one of the beaches in Lagos or go skiing, boating, or fishing at Lekki Leisure Lake. Or just stay on the beach in the afternoon and soak in the sun while reading, hunting for beautiful shells, or people watching. As night falls, go for a long walk at sunset, take great pictures of the seascape, or listen to the sound of the ocean or music from of the several live bands that frequent the beaches. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunshades, and a swimsuit.

Soak in some culture, expand your mind

Go and experience the past of Nigeria at museums or put in some reading hours at ZODML library, (one of the oldest and largest in Lagos). Walk on the streets of Omidun, Isale-Igangan, Campos, or Isale Eko and listen to the beats of ancient Lagos or take in a play or concert at the Muson Centre. Lekki Conservation Park offers great views of the flora and fauna.

There are no limits to the amount of fun artsy types can have in Lagos. Attend or even participate in the spoken word evenings held at Bogobiri House. Browse through (better still, buy) art at Rele Gallery or any of the great art galleries both on the Island and Mainland of Lagos. Attend book readings, browse through shelves, or buy books at Page Book Connoiseurs. Buy secondhand books or hunt for classics at Ojuelegba Underbridge, the Yaba bus stop, Marina, or Ikeja along the railway line.

Enjoy a taste of Lagos

With many dining options throughout the city, it may be hard to narrow down food options. Eat breakfast at Pancake Hub or a vegetarian lunch at Veggie Victory. Grab some coffee at Jazzhole, Terra Kulture, or Stranger. Enjoy a buffet lunch at any of the great local or continental restaurants in Lagos. Enjoy street food at Ojuelegba, Obalende, or at Yaba. Afterwards, walk some of the food off with a stroll around the old colonial quarters of Ikoyi.

Fitness geeks and adrenaline junkies can go jogging on the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge. Those who like to stick to indoor workouts can join a dance studio like Bodylanguage Studio in Mushin and learn how to do the Bàtá or salsa or meditate in a yoga class. Swim at the Lagos Country Club or play basketball, football, golf, or baseball at any of the many stadiums and sports clubs in Lagos. Those in an adventurous mood can go rock climbing at Olumo Rock, a two hour drive from Lagos.

Buy clothing materials at the open markets of Balogun and Ikoyi or buy fruit at Jankara. Wake up early and browse through the fish market in Epe and take pictures of the women selling fish directly from ponds. Those in more of a upscale mood can pop into any of the fashion boutiques on Lagos’ Island and Mainland. Get a makeover at any of the outlets of House of Tara.
