These 38 luxurious suites, on the grounds of the Beldi Country Club in Marrakech, are designed to resemble a traditional Moroccan village. Beldi Country Club covers 14ha (35 acres) and is home to ancient olive trees, swimming pools, a tennis court, a cinema and two restaurants with views over rose gardens to the Atlas Mountains. In keeping with the concept of a village, there’s even an on-site souk (marketplace) selling locally made carpets, pottery and other handicrafts, including embroidered pieces that help finance schools in the Atlas Mountains. You can even pick up a bottle of Beldi olive oil made using fruit grown on the grounds.

Looking for unsurpassed indulgence? The Royal Mansour Marrakech is renowned as one of the most beautiful and luxurious hotels in Morocco – perfect for couples looking to escape the everyday. Hidden behind an unassuming door just steps from the famous Jemaa El Fna square, the hotel is designed like a medina with traditional riads connected by winding alleyways. There are four on-site restaurants for celebrating special occasions, including the fine-dining La Grande Table Marocaine, which offers traditional delights such as seafood pastillas, seven-vegetable couscous and amlou (a mix of argan oil, almonds and honey) ice cream.

This upscale Morocco beach resort, on the Atlantic coast, lies just an hour from Casablanca. With 7km (4mi) of private beachside, there is scope for plenty of romantic adventure – think high-octane go-kart racing, sunset horse or camel riding and dining under the stars. Looking for something a bit more low-key? Relax in a secluded cabana, enjoy the Romantic Connection couple’s treatment in the spa, take a private couple’s yoga class, or take a sunset stroll along the beach. There’s also an on-site golf course designed by South African golfing great Gary Player.

This Riad, in the ancient city of Fez, has been restored from the ruins of three connecting family homes that once belonged to a famous Moroccan philosopher and an eminent judge. Today, it features 18 rooms and suites, set around a lush internal courtyard with a pool fringed by palm and mandarin trees. It offers couples an exclusive private escape, with its own restaurant and bar, private spa with hammam and well-equipped gym. For a taste of local culture, sign up for a Culinary Masterclass or Epicurean Experience. A knowledgeable guide will take you shopping for produce in the medina and teach you to cook traditional dishes that will forever remind you of your romantic getaway.

Escape the city and head into the High Atlas, the iconic mountain range that rises dramatically in the west at the Atlantic Ocean and stretches to the Moroccan-Algerian border in the east. Kasbah Tamadot was bought by Richard Branson during one of his ballooning expeditions and he has transformed it into a magical retreat that celebrates antiquities from around the world and a spirit of adventure. There are 28 rooms and suites including 10 romantic Berber Tents, some of which have private plunge pools. Discover the surrounding area and learn about Berber culture with the Authentically Berber Experience, which includes a mule trek, tea in a local Berber house, a cooking lesson and Berber bread baking.

Looking for a romantic honeymoon destination that also happens to be one of the world’s best surf spots? Head to Paradis Plage Surf Yoga & Spa Resort. This eco-resort, just north of Agadir between the Atlas Mountains and a stretch of the North Atlantic coast, is set amid 3ha (7 acres) of tropical gardens. The Surf House is the heart of this beach resort in Morocco – a relaxed waterside shack that acts as a hub for the surf school, as well as a meeting place to gather around a bonfire at sunset or watch a movie under the stars.

8. Dar Ahlam

Boutique Hotel, Hotel, Lodge

This 200-year-old rammed-earth kasbah (fortress) – at the edge of the desert near the city of Ouarzazate (the gateway to the Sahara) – is the stuff honeymoon dreams are made of. There are 14 rooms surrounded by palm groves and almond trees, a shaded swimming pool, hammam and a candlelit massage room. Every meal is private and served in one of the hotel’s distinct settings – think breakfast in the lush gardens, a picnic lunch beneath the basalt rock formations of nearby Legzira Beach, or a candlelit dinner atop a 12th-century agadir (fortified granary). The team can also arrange local adventures, such as hiking through the Valley of Roses or a dusk tea ceremony in a Berber village.

9. Dar Nour

Boutique Hotel

The Moroccan port city of Tangier, on the Strait of Gibraltar, has been a gateway between Africa and Europe since Phoenician times and, as such, it has a fascinating history. Step back in time at Dar Nour – also known as the House of Light – which is the city’s oldest guesthouse. It’s perched on 11th-century walls close to the Sultan’s Palace and boasts a mix of rooms and suites, all individually decorated in a Bohemian style with charismatic finds from the local souks. If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, book the Kahena suite, which is decorated with kaleidoscopic ceramic tiles. The indulgent Moroccan breakfast – which includes crème caramel and crêpes “mille trous” served with mountain honey – is also a must.

10. Le Farnatchi

Boutique Hotel, Luxury

The concierge team can also help arrange some of the more unusual experiences Morocco has to offer, from heli-skiing in the High Atlas Mountains and paragliding to exploring Marrakech by motorbike with a sidecar. Up the romance by booking a night in a luxury tent set up in a rural location of your choice, with a personal chef to cook a Berber dinner to enjoy under the stars.
