Located on the San Gabriel River, Georgetown is an Austin suburb teeming with local history and culture. While not always known for its restaurant scene, Georgetown’s historic downtown square, which has been voted the most beautiful square in Texas, has developed into a great place for its residents to grab a bite. Here are the 10 best restaurants in Georgetown’s downtown square.

Degrees Pizzeria & Drafthouse

600 Degrees Pizzeria & Drafthouse is always bustling with Georgetown residents and students from the local college, Southwestern University. This pizzeria boasts a selection of 30 beers on tap from across the country. In addition to locally famous pizzas, 600 Degrees’ menu offers several salad and chicken wing selections, calamari to start off your meal, and a New York style cheesecake or tiramisu for a sweet finish.

Breakfast omelet

Monument Cafe is a local spot that serves home­style 1940s cooking. Each meal is served with fresh, organic vegetables, and all natural meats. The menu has a large breakfast section, which is known for its all natural, free range eggs. This breakfast menu offers everything from omelettes, to pancakes, to breakfast sandwiches. The main entrees of the menu vary from fried chicken, to liver and onions. There is also a market open daily, which features local produce, meats, and dairy products.

Thundercloud Subs

Located in the old Georgetown firehouse, Thundercloud Subs is a fresh spot for a sandwich. Their menu features a variety of subs, a large salad selection, and a daily soup special to go along with any sandwich order. On the sweeter side, Thundercloud Subs offers there are smoothie options, milkshakes, brownies and cookies. For those with specific dietary requirements, there are gluten free options on the menu, such as the sandwich in a bowl, and gluten free buns and breads. Thundercloud Subs is also known for their annual Turkey Trot, an annual five mile run, one mile walk, and kids run, that raises money for Caritas of Austin, a service that helps those stricken by poverty.

Dos Salsas Cafe

A local Tex Mex Cafe, Dos Salsas is named for the two salsas that are placed on the table for the customer to choose from. The dinner menu includes seafood, American platters, fajitas, steaks, salads, and a large appetizer section. This cafe also has an extensive bar menu, featuring margaritas, two different styles of cocktails, wines, beers, spirits and after dinner drinks. Dos Salsas also has several Happy Hour selections, which range from all day to after work hour specials.

El Monumento

A branch of the Monument Cafe restaurant, this Mexican restaurant offers a high end feel with great views of the San Gabriel River. The large menu has a large list of different entrees, appetizers, wines, beers, and daily plate specials. The entrees vary from tacos and enchiladas, to soups and salads, as well as several plate options. The list of drinks boasts a large selection of wines, beers, margaritas, mexican martinis, and several different mixed cocktails, as well as a smaller list of after dinner drinks. El Monumento also has a selection of fine desserts, which includes Mexican classics like vanilla flan and tres leches cake. This restaurant also has a brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays.

Roots Bistro

Roots Bistro is a great place for Georgetown residents to relax with some food, beer, and live music. Known for their pizza and craft beer, this bistro is a popular downtown attraction for anyone who wants to enjoy music from local performers. The bistro offers a small selection of breakfast foods, which includes breakfast tacos, pizza, and pastries. For lunch and dinner, the menu has a large list of salads, sandwiches, and tacos, in addition to their pizza options. There is also a daily soup selection, and a small seasonal desserts option. The bistro also has nightly events such as board games night, karaoke, open mic night, blues and jazz music, and of course, live music on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Gumbo’s

With a Cajun style restaurant downstairs and a balcony bar, Gumbo’s restaurant is a local spot that’s been voted Austin’s Best Cajun/Creole cuisine in Georgetown. This restaurant offers a large menu which differs between lunch, dinner, and even brunch. The lunch selection varies from the soup of the day, salads, sandwiches, pastas, and several Cajun entrees. The dinner menu offers a great selection of Cajun entree dishes, such as blackened shrimp, catfish, and beef. There are also several vegetarian and gluten free options, such as salads, stuffed peppers, and some sauteed seafood.

Wildfire

Wildfire is a very popular restaurant in the downtown square. This restaurant flaunts a relaxed fine dining experience for its customers, with various options on their menu. The dinner menu offers a large selection: there is a great list of USDA dry aged premium steaks, with everything from filet mignon, to New York strip. In addition, the menu has some less common meat options, such as Ostrich, Elk, and Goose available for order, as well as a long list of chicken and seafood plates. The Wildfire menu has a hefty lineup of wines both from Texas wineries, and imported bottles. Wildfire also helps dozens of organizations and businesses, both locally and nationally. With large variation in both the food and wine options, Wildfire is a great spot for a high end meal in Georgetown.
