The Best Coffee Shops In Portland, Oregon

Sarah Lantz

Portland, food capital of the Pacific Northwest, is brimming with awesome coffee shops all around the city. We’ve picked out some of our favorite places for a cup of coffee that you should try and trust us, they’re all better than the chain places!

Coava Coffee Roasters

Coava Coffee Roasters

Buying coffee beans from sustainable farms around the world, using resources to build better processing facilities and develop improved preservation practices from picking to packaging, and buying a farmer’s whole harvest without leaving the farmer hard-to-sell remnants, Coava Coffee Roasters cares about where their beans come from and how they’re gathered. Their Espresso Bar is a warm and friendly place to sip a pleasant cup of coffee and meet up with friends or work. They offer tasty pastries from the local Little T American Baker and elegant teas from Portland’s Foxfire Tea.

Hot chocolate and a machiato at Albina Press

With baristas they send to national coffee competitions, Albina Press knows how to brew good coffee and make your favorite milky coffee drink taste like heaven. They also do awesome designs for their hot chocolates, from unicorns to intricate flowers, a plus for kids and people who like hot chocolate. Customers have said this place will ruin the taste of normal coffee for you forever. The atmosphere is very laid back with a sprawling number of tables to study at, work, and relax.

Barista

Located in four different districts of Portland, Barista is a popular Portland chain of coffee shops. The original, in the Pearl District, is a cozy café with exposed industrial brick walls and minimalist wood tables. It may not be the best for sitting, but the coffee is well made and the lattes smooth and creamy. They use a siphon-brewing method to separate the coffee from the grounds.

Heart

With quality green coffee from Africa, South America, and Central America roasted to perfection, Heart serves delicious drip coffee. They also sell delicious scones, muffins, and other pastries. With a simple, minimalistic aesthetic, Heart is a comfortable and open place naturally lit to study and work or sit by the window and people watch with a warm comfort drink.

Latte at Coffeehouse Northwest

Coffeehouse Northwest

Serving tasty pastries like the ‘Maple Bacon Scone’ and much hyped and delicious coffee, Coffeehouse Northwest is a Portland favorite. The exposed brick walls are decorated with local art and the windows are large and welcome in natural light. For those with their laptops, there are plenty of outlets for charging. Besides favorites like cappuccinos with fine, tight foam and creamy vanilla lattes, hot chocolates and chai teas are good too.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
