There is truly no better pub grub combination than a frosty pint paired with a plate of crispy fried fish and French fries, or ‘chips’. So pull up a stool, watch the ‘football’ game, and prepare to be wowed by these restaurants serving some of the best fish and chips on this side of the Pond. We give you our top picks for fish and chips in New York City.

1. A Salt & Battery

Fish and Chip Shop, Restaurant, British, Seafood, Fast Food

This Greenwich Village-based fish and chips shop is praised by British ex-pats, which means that it’s as close to the real deal as you’re going to get on this side of the Atlantic. There are several types of fish you can get battered, from pollock and haddock to sole and whiting. For a light and fluffy fried fish, the sole is recommended.

2. Eastwood

Bar, American

Eastwood offers an exceptional draft selection and your better-than-average bar food, as well as some killer fish and chips. Expect an intensely deep golden fried crust around Eastwood’s fish. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon, and you’ve got yourself summer on a plate.

3. Donovan's Pub

Bar, Gastropub, Pub, Pub Grub

While the borough of Queens is rapidly improving, it’s a pretty safe bet that Donovan’s isn’t going anywhere. This Irish pub hasn’t changed since it opened in 1967. This is great news for fish and chips fans because Donovan’s serves some of the best in Queens. Fried cod is partnered with thick, chunky chips, and served up with a side of lettuce and tomato.

5. The Atlantic ChipShop

Restaurant, Fish and Chip Shop, Pub, Seafood, Pub Grub

This quirky Brooklyn Heights pub is serving up their fish and chips with a little bit of punk rocker flair. The Atlantic ChipShop is a cardiologist’s worst nightmare but their British pub fare is some of the best in the city. That said, their massive fried cod and chips is a must, especially paired with a side of their curry dipping sauce. If you still have room for more, go for the fried pizza, the fried mac and cheese, or a deep-fried Twinkie for dessert.

6. Molly's Pub

Pub, Bar, Irish

This isn’t the kind of bar to don your finest shoes in – Molly’s is an authentic Irish pub, complete with sawdust floors and a wood-burning fireplace. Rich cod filets get a good deep-fry and are served up with chips, tarter sauce, and lemon.

7. Longbow Pub & Pantry

Pub, Restaurant, British

If you’re looking for crispy fish and chips, a frosty pint, and a place to pull up a chair and watch a game of soccer, this Bay Ridge hangout is the place to go. Longbow Pub & Pantry’s fish and chips are crunchy, buttery, and perfect for when you’re in need of some hearty comfort food.

8. Jones Wood Foundry

Located on the Upper East Side, Jones Wood Foundry is your quintessential cozy gastropub, which also happens to serve up some pretty amazing fish and chips. Cod gets dipped in beer batter, then fried to golden perfection and served alongside chips and tarter sauce. If you happen to come on a nice day, be sure to eat outside in the courtyard.
