The Best Places To Watch Flamenco In Madrid

Flamenco, Spain’s most famous style of dance and music, is known the world over for its energy, color and beauty. Even though it is more prolific in the South, all the famous artists come to perform in Madrid’s excellent establishments, with thousands flocking to watch them and take part in the fun. Here we list some of the best places to relax over a drink and watch flamenco in Madrid.

Corral de la Morería

Corral de la Morería is the oldest flamenco locale in the capital, with its first spectacle taking place over fifty years ago in 1956. There are performances here almost every day, and in June 2015 they are putting on special shows after midnight too, with famous artists coming to discuss their new albums, celebrities explaining the history of flamenco art in Spain, or special degustation shows, such as sherry tasting during the flamenco show. They also have an excellent restaurant, making it the perfect place to spend an evening.

Casa Patas is another place that puts on live flamenco shows in Madrid. It defines itself as a tavern-restaurant with a flamenco tablao – the term for the floorboard on top of which the flamenco show takes place. It is located in the center of Madrid and also has a flamenco school and a flamenco foundation. Dinner and a show cost from 60€ upward and it is necessary to book in advance, as with most of the places on this list.

Torres Bermejas

Founded in 1960, some of the best Flamenco artists in Spain have performed at the Torres Bermejas, with numerous famous spectators in attendance: the queen of Spain has been here as well as other members of Spanish nobility and television icons. The restaurant at Torres Bermejas serves good food and its décor is awe-inspiring. The establishment aspires to reproduce the interior of the eponymous Torres Bermejas of Granada’s Alhambra, bringing a Southern feel to the capital.

Cardamomo

Cardamomo is located near the Puerta del Sol, in the heart of Madrid. It too has a foundation dedicated to making flamenco known around the world and promoting performances. It opened in 1994 and has become immensely successful since it was recently recognized by the New York Times as the best tablao in Madrid. It is one of the biggest flamenco locales in the capital and has excellent performers. A show with a drink, usually sangria, costs from 25 to 39€.

Café de Chinitas

Café de Chinitas is known for the beautiful shawls that are spread around the locale, decorating it in an Andalusian style. It is located in the center of the city near Gran Vía in an 18th century palace. The restaurant also serves excellent food, making it an all around wonderful sensory experience. There are two 90-minute shows each day, except on Sundays. Some of the best flamenco artists have danced on its stage and it attracts quite a crowd, so visitors should book in advance.

Las Tablas

One of the newer establishments in Madrid, Las Tablas has been operating for around 10 years, but in that short period it has risen to the top of the list of flamenco bars in the capital. It has two shows each day, one at 8pm and the other at 10pm. The prices range from 27€ to 76€, depending on the type of ticket visitors want – with dinner, tapas or just a drink. This locale also has a vegetarian menu, so is an excellent choice for non meat-eaters.
