Italy is the origin country of one of the world’s most popular foods: pizza. Whilst Naples is recognised as the pizza motherland and Rome is known for pizza with a thin and crispy base, Milan has its fair share of outstanding pizzerias, too. Here’s our guide to some of the best places to get your fix in the city.

1. Pizza AM

Pizzeria, Italian

Downtown on the Corso di Porta Romana is Pizza AM, a place that is among the most acclaimed pizzerias in the city. With only seven options, the menu is small, but, as is often the case with great restaurants, a smaller menu translates into better, more thoughtfully prepared cuisine. As renowned for its customer service as for the quality of its pizza, don’t be surprised if you’re greeted with a complimentary glass of Prosecco and a slice of focaccia. If you’re planning to visit on Saturday night, it’s so popular you’re likely to find people spilling out onto the street.

2. Gino Sorbillio Lievito Madre

Pizzeria, Italian

This venue has an impressive reputation on the Milanese pizza scene and its convenient location on the bustling Largo Corsia dei Servi has only served to increase its popularity. Founded by acclaimed pizzaiolo Gino Sorbillo, who specializes in soft-crust Neapolitan pizza, Lievito makes a daily total of 400 pies, and no more – so be sure to get there early. The addition of a fine selection of beers and wine, comfortable interiors, friendly service and a buzzing atmosphere make this a must-visit. This is the original pizzeria, but Soribllio has since opened additional restaurants on Via Montevideo and Via Ugo Foscolo. No reservations.

3. Superpizza

Pizzeria, Italian

Serving super-thin, crispy pizza – low on oil, light and yeast-free – Superpizza has an extensive menu of flavourful combinations. With its commitment to the use of locally grown, all-organic ingredients, you can always be sure that this pizza is of the highest quality. Conveniently situated just a few blocks from the famous Porta Romana, the restaurant is the perfect venue for a quick, relaxing meal after a day on the town.

5. Cinder Mount

Pizzeria, Italian

This tiny establishment along the Viale Monte Ceneri provides gourmet Neapolitan pizza at a price almost unheard of in Milan: dinner for two (including two pizzas, two beers, coffee and dessert) costs under 30 euro. Particularly appealing is the beautifully presented calzone, piled high with thick-sliced ham and prosciutto. Well-reviewed for its fast, friendly service, Cinder Mount is one of Milan’s best-kept pizza secrets.
