The 10 Best Places For Coffee In Montpellier, France

Laura Broomhead

France is no stranger to great coffee, and the trendy Southern French city of Montpellier has not been exempt from the world’s sudden love affair with all things coffee. Within the narrow, winding streets of the city’s Old Town you’ll find an abundance of wonderful cafés, and there’s more great coffee shops if you venture a little further out. Here we show you the 10 best places for the perfect cup of coffee in the city.

1. Home Coffee

Cafe, Coffee, Tea

Home Coffee aims to be a coffee shop à la maison, and you will definitely feel at home in this cozy café situated in the heart of Écusson. There’s outdoor seating if you want to catch some of Montpellier’s seemingly year-round sunshine, or settle down in one of the comfy armchairs flanked by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. There’s a wide range of drinks to choose from; from cappuccinos, mochas and iced-lattes to delicious fruit smoothies, and everything in between; as well as a selection of salads, sandwiches, wraps and sweet treats.

2. Fairview Coffee

Fairview Coffee

This coffee shop à l’américaine is a French take on the classic American coffee house chains. Here, you’ll find freshly ground coffee, lattes and cappuccinos inspired by the seasons and a wide variety of teas to enjoy while munching on one of the homemade house pastries (we did say it was a French take), sweet or savory pancakes, or the special Brunch option if you’re there on a Sunday. The location is great too, Fairview Coffee is just a couple of streets away from the beautiful Place de la Comédie.

Coffee Club may be small but it is perfectly formed and the relaxed and enjoyable ambiance definitely packs a punch.

This coffee shop is like no other in Montpellier; here, the main selling point is not freshly ground coffee or delicious desserts, but rather the chance to meet the café’s cats. A concept which originated in Asia, ‘cat cafés’ are now doing the rounds in many European cities, and Montpellier (a city that is always up to date on all things trendy) has followed suit. As the only one of its kind in the city, animal lovers flock to Kafelin, not only for the novelty of dining among cats (though the feline residents definitely take center stage) but also for their great food and drinks, friendly owners and relaxed atmosphere.

8. La Coutinelle

Restaurant, Gluten-free, French

Everything on La Coutinelle’s menu is homemade, and everything is gluten-free, vegetarian and a lot of it made without milk products, as the owner’s believe everybody should be able to enjoy fresh, tasty, wholesome food. If you follow a gluten-free diet, or even if you just enjoy great homemade food in a calm, relaxed atmosphere, this is the place for you. La Coutinelle also sells many of its products, so you can take a little taste of the café home with you.

9. Atys Café

10. Café Solo

Café Solo

Café Solo is one of the oldest and most well-loved coffee shops in Montpellier. Buried deep within the labyrinth that is Montpellier’s old town, this isn’t the easiest café to find, but it’s definitely worth the effort. Here, you will be warmly welcomed by the knowledgeable and passionate staff and, immediately on entering, be greeted by that full, aromatic coffee smell, thanks to Café Solo’s home-roasted coffee beans. This quaint little café with a wide selection of coffees, teas, juices and smoothies, plus the all-important sweet treats, is the perfect place to relax and unwind.
